A black powder magazine explosion at Mare Island Navy Yard in Vallejo California at 7 55 pm today killed nine people and injured about forty. Officials, with censorship in place, suspect foul play and have launched an investigation as fire destroyed adjoining buildings. The eye of the theater dims as Montgomery Phister, longtime editor of the Commercial Tribune amusement section, dies at his home on Edwards Road shortly before 11 pm Monday. 23 Student Airmen Fly Mile a Minute Without Accident
Chicago July 9 23 army airplanes led by Captain Roy S Brown of the Signal Corps completed what was believed to be the longest squadron flight to date. Twenty three planes took off at Ashburn Illinois at 6 am and rode in one hour and forty five minutes to Rantoul near Champaign flying essentially a mile a minute with no accidents. One craft landed twelve miles from Rantoul for gasoline and then continued with minimal delay. The Ashburn camp was abandoned due to land price disputes with the government.
