A prolonged heat wave grips the region as temperatures reach 94 degrees by mid afternoon and humidity climbs. Health officials warn pet owners as multiple dog and cat bite cases surface, including several children, with medical treatment noted at local hospitals.
Walter P Stamp found guilty of willful murder of W Smith Russell in Louisville criminal court. Verdict carries the death penalty after a one hour twenty minute jury deliberation. Stamp did not testify. defense counsel failed to secure venue change or continuance. State witnesses included Mrs Russell and Catherine Russell. Stamp’s son Howard testified his father had a pistol. Mrs Russell said Stamp shouted I am going to kill you before firing. Jury foreman read the verdict. Stamp smiled. Judge Harry Robinson did not sentence today and an appeal was signaled.

Witnesses include Dr C F Hoover linking illness to possible arsenic or lead poisoning as the case opens. The jury viewed the Lakewood scene and is guarded by deputies at a hotel.
Paris reports a French Chamber of Commerce protest against a new U S tariff provision that would require American inspectors to review French exporters’ books to determine ad valorem duties. French officials argue such inspection is unprecedented and unlikely to be accepted.
Secretary of State Charles Hughes urges President Harding to resubmit the peace treaty with reservations to safeguard U S rights arising from the war. He advises adoption of the document with specified reservations to ensure continued American sovereignty and protections.

Franklin Ohio officers, led by Marshal William Graham, pursue Harry Purvis who allegedly shot Oliver Ringold on Eighth Street after Ringold demanded Purvis remove hands from his pockets. Ringold died. Purvis fled toward Cincinnati in a car as a warrant and manhunt expand. Ringold had recently sold a poolroom to Purvis and claimed $57 in a settled deal.
Charles Nassis a 21 year old candy wheel handler from 217 East Pearl Street drowned after a dip off the breakwater at Coney Island. He vanished while waiting between boat trips as George Ellis watched in heat relief swim. Recovery attempts failed as water near eighteen feet deep hampered dredging and no body was found by late night.
Robert Taubert of Milwaukee was found today by fishermen in an oarless rowboat on Pewaukee Lake with a knife in his heart. He was last seen alive Monday night with a young woman whose identity is unknown to his companions.

Hood River Ore July 6 Luther Fagan escaped from a state penitentiary last year. He shot Miller and abducted his wife Pearl and a ten year old boy and the woman. Armed posses pursued with orders to shoot on sight and Fagan was killed tonight after being surrounded in a thicket. Miller was not seriously wounded.
Secretary Mellon asked Congress to delay the soldiers' bonus bill warning of a likely immediate deficit. He warned the plan could cost 1.5 to 5.25 billion dollars, swell government expenses, hinder debt refunding and inflate prices, while delaying cash payments. Senator Underwood criticized the bill as political camouflage and urged a lump sum to aid veterans.
A $30,000 whisky robbery near Covington prompted a 60 minute police hunt. Officers recovered 125 cases worth $15,000 at the Mother of God Cemetery and arrested four Newport men identified by guards as gang members. The heist began as 20 gunmen stopped two liquor trucks and forced drivers and guards to surrender. The bandits fled toward Newport, where detectives detained the suspects and later linked them to the earlier hold-up.

Fargo North Dakota July 6 Charges allege three members of the State Executive Committee of the Non partisan League misused about 50 000 from the recall election campaign fund. A special edition of The Fargo Courier News was halted from circulation as editors faced demands. Copies printed were burned and materials destroyed at the editors office.
Chicago reports fall men s footwear will favor heavy brogue styles with a strap fastening replacing laces. J Kalisky president of the Shoe Travelers Association of Chicago says prices won t drop soon, noting wartime prices have already fallen about 30 percent.
Levi Nackel, asleep in bed, was awakened as a car rammed into his home off the Ashley road in Delaware. Burton Windsor of Mt Gilead, driving from Columbus, failed the turn. Windsor was uninjured while the house suffered significant damage.
