President McKinley issues a national Thanksgiving proclamation calling on Americans to worship and give thanks for naval and military victories at Manila Bay and Santiago de Cuba. He prays for divine protection for soldiers and sailors, mourning for the fallen, and swift restoration of peace and security.
The Spanish cruiser Reina Mercedes was sunk at Havana after night bombardment as the blockade of Admiral Cervera’s squadron continued. The Alfonso XII was also sunk while attempting to run the blockade. her crew survived and movement at Santiago was postponed.
The Hawaii annexation is now accomplished for the legislative branch as Senate passes resolutions 42 to 2. An amendment granting Hawaiians a voice in the matter was defeated. The decision follows early conference talks by Senate leaders.
President announced a vote on resolutions after a long debate on annexation plans. Opponents expressed relief as allies welcomed the decision to proceed, with Senators White Pettigrew Allen and Morrill speaking before the vote concluded.
About fifty of the 400 Spanish prisoners broke from the Harvard steerage in a bid for liberty. Guards fired, killing six and wounding fifteen as the mutiny was quashed. No Americans suffered injuries.
Lieutenant Ord was killed by a wounded Spaniard he attempted to save at General Shafter's headquarters. The incident occurred amid tense conditions as U.S. forces operated in the area.
In Havana on July 6 the Spanish cruiser Alfonso XII. left port and the Senate tabulated a two to one test vote on an amendment by Mr White of California. The vote, part of a heated debate over annexation, failed to reach the two thirds needed for ratification as galleries filled and spectators arrived to witness.
In a dense fog off Sable Island, the French liner La Bourgogne collided with the British Cromartyshire and sank within 30 minutes. Of 725 aboard, over 500 perished. only 168 saved, with a single woman among the survivors. The Cromartyshire rescued crew and some passengers, while chaos and feared cruelty were reported among La Bourgogne’s stricken crowd.
