The Senate defeated the Pettus beet sugar bounty amendment amid six weeks of tariff-row theatrics. Allen and Thurston fought to add a bounty while Republicans largely opposed delaying tactics. Pettus alleged trusts blocking reform as Allen pressed for beet sugar relief.
Mr Allison moves the Allen amendment establishing a sugar bounty and the motion passes with a large majority. The negative speakers include Allen Butler Harris Heitfeld Kyle Pettigrew Stewart Teller Mantle and the Populists and silver Republicans. Mr Teller insists the bounty should benefit the North West. Pettigrew questions white pine lumber pricing. An agreement for a final vote is set for tomorrow. The Senate adjourns at 6 10.
Secretary Gage writes to Senator Allison proposing a one cent a pound tax on refined sugar made from stock imported before the tariff bill. Treasury officials estimate the duty would raise several millions in revenue, but the burden would fall on those able to bear it. Senate committee action unknown.
Mr Adolph Moses and Miss Laura Conant were married today in Kenton Colorado and immediately left for Cincinnati on their wheels. The couple plans a bridal trip visiting friends and familiar sites along their route, celebration details were noted by the Special Dispatch to the Commercial Tribune.
Outlaw Frank James, once the subject of a $50,000 reward, traveled to Harrodsburg Kentucky to visit Colonel J P and Kit Chinn on Sunday. He has reportedly been seen with Kit Chinn at the St Louis track before this visit.
Bushrod Kelch, bound for Columbus, pleads guilty to second degree murder and faces life imprisonment. In a final interview he says he cannot remember the killing of his wife, suspects she shot herself, and cites drunken amnesia and rage as factors in the incident.
Clarence Crane the New York reporter faced arrest for stealing Henry B. Foulke’s Buddha idol. Foulke alleging a three person conspiracy Crane alleges poisoning attempt while a District Court hearing opened with witness Harry Daniels detailing street meeting before the theft. The case adjourned to Thursday as Crane seeks more witnesses.
Allen Mc Arthur, grandson of ex Governor McArthur, died by self inflicted gunshot at his Circleville country home. Despondence and mounting financial troubles cited as causes. He was involved in a long land litigation case originating from the Governor’s estate, pursued through the courts to the Supreme Court before resolution.
William Houchman was fatally injured yesterday in Circleville County while walling up a well. A windlass broke, dropping a tub of stones on his back and killing him.
Wooster Ohio July 6 by order of Mayor Jeffries Chief of Police James Latimer is removing all nickel in the slot machines from saloons as a public order action.
President Ratchford of the United Mineworkers reports strong progress in the strike from Columbus Ohio noting a four week coal stock in the northwest and six weeks for railroads. Pittsburg District mines face near total suspension with only a few under contract continuing. He urges united action for broader goals including eight hour day and minimum wage, while praising wide support from unions and public groups.
In Pittsburg July 6 ten to fifteen thousand of twenty one thousand miners join the United Mine Workers strike. The pivotal Pittsburg district sees a push for a general suspension while operators deny success. Sixty two railroad mines idle with many others uncertain as to status.
In Columbus on July 6 the Ohio State Penitentiary reported a June earnings of 2280.60 to the state, exceeding expenses and marking the first time the institution has been self-sustaining. Warden Coffin presented the figures to the Board of Managers.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune from Bucyrus Ohio reports Mrs. G M Tagert lifting a bucket of boiling water to avoid her child. the scalding contents poured over the baby as the bucket passed overhead, and the injuries proved fatal.
In Huntington West Virginia on July 6 a quarrel between neighbors over a dog fight escalated. Ben Arthur allegedly shot Tim Black through the heart after the men renewed their dispute following the dogs’ battle. Arthur fled to Ohio.
In Lexington Kentucky Mrs Maria McCann is attacked by an unknown man leaving her throat badly swollen and wounded. Doctors treat her and a possible suspect linked to a discharged cook and a strange negro man is being investigated as a lead. The case unsettles local residents and authorities pursue a possible revenge motive.
Wilmington July 6 Proprietor James L Willits of the Clayton House received a telegram from Los Angeles detailing the death by self inflicted wound of C W Neff former night clerk who absconded May 8 with 430 from a guest Neff had locked the hotel safe and experts spent fourteen hours opening it Neffs mother in Cincinnati has charge of his body Neff formerly resided in Cincinnati where his family was prominent in fashionable circles He came to Wilmington in 1896 He was discharged the night of the theft and detectives pursued him for weeks Willis believes fear of capture drove him to suicide.
The Rev. Orville E. Watson, minor canon of Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland, was charged in Police Court for violating the bicycle ordinance after his bicycle lantern light was extinguished on Euclid avenue Monday night. He paid the costs after a policeman arrested him and Judge Fiedler imposed the fine.
In Los Angeles a former Santa Fe freight worker attempted to kill his eight year old daughter by giving her carbolic acid and then killed himself with prussic acid. The girl survived after hospital care. he had written a note to a friend prior to the act. The child said she obeyed her father though she did not want to die.
In Williamsburg Kentucky on July 6 the trial of Dan Curry, charged with killing Louisville traveler John Corley at Corbin Ky, opens with the Commonwealth near finishing its case. It alleges Corley went to Curry's home, was shot, and later found dead inside with four bullets. the defense is not expected to offer testimony.
In Wilmington Delaware on July 6 the Harvey murder trial began with the court instructing the jury that a breakfast table conversation between Ida Harvey and Jennie Harvey would not be admitted unless the jurors find the defendant present and heard it. In the afternoon the State’s opening argument was delivered by Hon. E. J. West former prosecuting attorney.
The Kentucky State Encampment opened at Fountain Ferry Park Louisville with a national salute of forty five guns as the new U S flag was raised. First to arrive were Company B Wickliffe followed by Company H Owensboro then Company C Bardstown and others from Henderson Bowling Green Hopkinsville and Madisonville. Regulars were not seen at Union Station and their absence was unexplained.
Pittsburg July 6 Four people were fatally injured and twenty more hurt after a street car jumped the track on Forbes Street Hill during fireworks crowds returning from Schenley Park. Victims include Michael Doyle and W A Manly with severe injuries. Miss Smith and C C Rogers listed as dying or severely hurt.
Mrs McKinley remains at home in Canton noting the fall yesterday caused a sore but non serious wound. She says she will soon fully recover and rested well last night despite the mishap.
Springfield July 6 Mr Harry Bretney manager of Bretney Tann eries and social figure pleaded guilty in Police Court to obstructing street railway traffic He was fined 1 and costs for pulling the trolley off a car when the motorman refused to stop between crossings for him
Anderson Indiana July 6 The Western National Tin Plate Company of Anderson and the American Tin Plate Company of Hiwood began operations at their plants under the new wage scale.
Columbus reports that "Mother" Jones a Black healer from Sabina agreed to leave Ohio to avert prosecution under the state Medical Board. She charged fifty cents per patient and combined prayer with massage, claiming divine cures, which sparked church splits and public controversy in Sabina and Clinton County.
George Hall, identified as a Louisville & Nashville train robber, was arrested Sunday by Detective McAnanny in a Main street Turkish bath room. He faces possible transfer to Alabama for the Calera express robbery, with $3,000 taken. Chief Vallins confirmed the identity from a distinguishing chin scar. Hall to be held pending transfer. $300 reward offered.
Captain Longmire and Chief Trumpeter Bronaugh return from Franklin where Winchester and Franklin guards kept George Green Dinning, condemned to seven years for killing Jodie Conn, leader of a regulator band. Three guards ill, Stewart Gordon and Duvall stay to tend them. Baxter shot foot, Quinn fever. One will relocate if pardoned, sells land and burned house.
Lexington Ky July 6 councilman Oots visited Mrs Davide, keeper of the city dog shelter, prompting a lively scene. He threatens to split the council or abolish the institution as the shelter faces closure for a period.
Thomas Walsh declined installation as Supreme Secretary of the Catholic Knights of America. President Feeney appointed Joseph Carroll to succeed retiring Secretary O Rourke, with William Kelly named to the vacancy of Grand Trustee. The move occurs in Ft Wayne Indiana on July 6.
Lexington reporter notes 14 year old John Adams sustained the loss of his left eye from a premature explosion of a giant firecracker this afternoon. Doctors fear further complications and recovery is uncertain.

In Zanesville Ohio on July 6 the Democrats of the joint Ninth-Fourteenth District nominated J A Ivers of McConnelsville and Judge Rutter of Lancaster over Hugh Gormley of Glouster who led miners and a large following with two brass bands but failed to win the nomination.
Valparaiso Ind July 6 Word reached here that Joseph McGinnis a farmer near Wilder drowned while fishing with his daughters at Dunns Bridge in Kankakee River He rolled from the bridge while asleep sank from sight and his body was recovered downstream half a mile below the bridge His father owns several thousand acres in the Kankakee Valley
On a Hartsville farm W. A. Allen’s boiler exploded during threshing, killing nine and injuring five. Victims include W. A. Allen and family members plus locals Lindsay Allen and Bolten. three wounded are fatally injured. Allen was a Trousdale County official.
Detroit July 6 twenty six local breweries have driven beer to four dollars per barrel with small rivals nearly wiped out. Julius Stroh backed by English capitalists plans a massive consolidation urging owners to surrender plants for half cash and half stock with beer prices to jump to six dollars per barrel.
Ten of the Margest breweries in Allegheny County were merged to form the Pennsylvania Brewing Company with a $10,000,000 capitalization. The management denies plans to raise prices to retailers or consumers and says the aim is market control and cost reduction without wage cuts.
Frances Hayes daughter of the late President R B Hayes announced engagement to Ensign Harry B Smith U S N at a Spiegel Grove tea. Smith, about 30, serves as an instructor on the U S Ship Constellation.
Colonel W P Breckinridge engaged by Justin Rice the cowboy preacher and wife street evangelists arrested in Breckinridge locale. Rice charged with vagrancy and his wife with disorderly conduct. Trial postponed to tomorrow. In Columbus Ohio Walker Lead Co of Cincinnati incorporated with 50000 dollars capital by Alfred Barker Joseph B Blettner Jacob Behlein and Charles.
Calcutta reports say unrest spreads as 8 000 mill hands along the Hoogly strike and plan to march on Calcutta. The government orders military intervention while Mohammedans near Garden Reach show restlessness prompting guards at nearby bridges.
