Indiana prison case recalls D C Stephenson's alleged political deals as Marion County Prosecutor William Remy and assistants hold a four hour conference. Stephenson resisted newspaper access but hinted a public statement may follow.
Miss Evelyn Barrett, 19, dangled 2000 feet above a field for 30 minutes after a parachute rope tied in a slip knot. Pilot R D Ellis diverted to a plowed field and made a safe landing. Barrett, uninjured, insisted on another try and completed a successful second jump before the crowd of about 3000.
Tyler Meredith a 46 year old steam shovel engineer living at the Central Hotel died from a fractured jaw after a beating in a room. A man known to have fled to Portsmouth, Ohio on a murder charge is being sought. Detective Wagner traced the suspect who admitted the assault. Meredith had relatives in Louisville and Knoxville and left behind a steam shovel engineer union card.
Circuit Court issued capiases for Fred Osius wealthy inventor in the Biscayne Bay drownings last week of Mrs Bertha Miller and her six year old son Marvin The charges allege unlawful reckless and negligent driving after an auto driven by Osius plunged from the causeway into the bay. Miller and the child perished while Osius and Ben Miller escaped Coroner ruled the deaths an unavoidable accident and said wheel strike on trolley track caused loss of control. no arrest yet
Joseph Dunninger, billed as a mind reader, is summoned to Traffic Court for a long parked car. The clerk asks his occupation and he replies with his stage persona. The magistrate, amused, signs a sentence of five dollars or two days in jail.
The City Planning Commission and officials endorsed a $1 million airport bond in a five year bond program totaling about $45 million. Mayor Seasoning urged urgent action as figures show reductions in rapid transit funds and Beeler traffic reports pending.
In Greater Cincinnati yesterday three individuals faced personal crises. John Listermann, 74, killed himself with a rifle over ill health and nearing blindness. In Newport a newlywed woman, Tilda Shepard, stabbed herself after learning of her husband’s infidelity. Genevieve Harrison, 27, sought poison, with Carl Harrison unable to explain the act.
The New York World News Service reports the tale of Charles R. Otis of Yonkers who wed Margaret Nesbit at age 91 nine years before his death. If valid, Nesbit inherits eighty three thousand five hundred dollars. the marriage occurred as Otis lay near death in Charleston. Authorities found no foul play in Otis's May death, and nephews contest the will affecting bequests.
In Baltimore two life term inmate Charles P Carey and Benjamin F Spragins of Richmond opened fire in the Maryland Penitentiary lobby as guard Alfred Walker distributed packages. Walker was wounded fatally above the heart and two convicts were shot. Stortz returned fire. Officials said Walker’s condition remained critical and further action could follow.
A major boardwalk fire in Atlantic City New Jersey razed a block between Missouri and Arkansas avenues destroying eight hotels and many residences. Three firemen were overcome as flames fueled by wind burned for three hours. The Remington Arms exhibit burned and the blaze caused about $300 000 in damage, with hundreds made homeless.
A southbound Ontario and Western passenger train collided with a standing West Shore freight near Iona Island on July 6, killing three passengers and injuring many. Names of dead and injured include Barnett Goldberg Irving Samodovitz and others from New York Brooklyn New Jersey and West Point. Rescue crews and bystanders aided victims as the Pullman car collapsed behind the baggage car.
Judge Benson W. Hough announced a full investigation into Saturday night Prohibition raids that led to thirty arrests and possible unlawful detention in Dayton Springfield and Columbus jails for up to seventy two hours without counsel. Constables Severs and Sidwell received prison sentences after a May jury conviction for conspiracy.
The Detroit II balloon piloted by A. A. Rasmussen from Detroit reportedly sets a new world long distance record for balloons in the third category with about 580 miles to Kinston North Carolina. Detroit III lands at Mt Vale Virginia after a 23 hour 28 minute endurance flight, breaking the endurance mark.
Florence Sussman of Chautauqua New York planned to marry Tony Schiavo of Pleasantville New York, her father's 23 year old chauffeur. Sheriff Logan intervened after a call from the girl's father and police, halting the scheme in Elkton Maryland where the pair were staying at a hotel. The girl was taken away by her father and the chauffeur was placed in the officer's custody.
Mrs Hope Leontough sought health through a 54 day fast in Toronto Ontario. She collapsed on day 55 and lies at Western Hospital as doctors try to save her with orange juice and glucose. Her husband, thin and distressed, says she was inspired by physical culture books and he opposed the fast but allowed it.
Henry C. R. Japing of Chicago files for divorce on desertion grounds and plans to give his wife to Walter Reichenback a Leipzig embossing business owner. Mrs Marie Prager Japing, of German descent, lives in Leipzig with their two children. Reichenback pleads for the match and cites long friendship with the Prager family.
Trenton authorities filmed events to gather evidence against Sam Ferguson and Roger Renfro labeled rival bootleg kings. Arrests on multiple liquor transportation charges ended weeks of undercover work by Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Layson and Sheriff Dan McKinnon, with witnesses concealed at a rented house. Three cars seized. officials estimate a weekly bootlegging volume of about seventy five gallons per man.
Four people were killed when a Puget Sound Airway Company seaplane plunged into Lake Washington near Seattle. Pilot Olaf Johnson, passengers Roy Wolin and J Bock, and Fred Stancliffe, all Seattle area residents or visitors, died as harbor boats recovered bodies after the 4:30 pm crash follows a spin at 500 feet.
Helen Konkel pled guilty to robbery with a gun and fainted on sentencing. Judge Sullivan sent her to three to twenty years, carried out of the courtroom unconscious. Three accompanying boyfriends received similar terms after the Milwaukee jeweler heist worth 4006 dollars.
London report says Tsingtao, a key Kiaochow Bay city in Shantung, fell to Nationalist forces as Gen Chen, northern commander in the area, retreated with his troops. The loss follows a recession near Tsingtao between Kiaochow and Kaomi.
In Trenton New Jersey Republicans adopt a Volstead law referendum plank despite opposition from women delegates. Senator Emerson L Richards sponsors the measure with support from ex Governor Edward C Stokes. Democrats push for wine and beer while signaling possible cross party votes on prohibition repeal in 1928.
