About 175 people are reported drowned when the excursion steamer Columbia sank in fog off the Peoria shore after hitting a hole in the bow. Some survivors were brought to Pekin by relief train as doctors and nurses rushed to the scene.
Weather outlook across Ohio Kentucky Indiana and West Virginia shows mostly fair or partly cloudy conditions with cooler spells in the north. Temperature readings from multiple stations list highs in the 80s, lows around the upper 60s to low 70s, and light precipitation totals near zero at most locations.
Washington May 5 President Wilson indicated willingness to delay final enactment of the war time telegraph telephone and radio control measure until after the midsummer recess Senate and House leaders prepared for a recess August 12 and planned to push the telegraph resolution unless the President demands immediate passage in the Senate
Special Dispatch reports that at about 5 pm Ralph Flannagan 22 driving a delivery truck across the Ohio Traction Company track at Brosey avenue Lindenwahl Hamilton was killed when an interurban struck the vehicle. 14 year old Cyril DuVall riding with him was badly injured with a broken leg and possible fatal internal injuries. The motorman says Flannagan turned onto the track suddenly making a stop impossible. The truck was wrecked.
New York July 6. J P 3 Charles MacVeagh and Elihu Meehee are among the incorporators of the Relief of Italy Fund, incorporated today by the State Supreme Court. The organization aims to provide immediate relief to men, women and children affected by the fevers and calamities in Italy.
ETORSA July 5 Premier Botha of the Union of South Africa states that serious unrest exists and strong police and military measures are needed. He cites enemy agencies at work and explains the tense situation driven by political activities, urging public awareness of the state of affairs.
Washington July 5 figures on war profits show large gains across sectors. Dairy interests, banks, contractors, flour mills, and food dealers report substantial increases from 1916 to 1917, with profits ranging from modest to several hundred percent. Names withheld pending fuller data. data drawn from income and excess profits returns.
Pure and undiluted. St Thomas Virgin Islands July 5 The Virgin Islands have gone dry as local legislatures adopt the governments proposals for prohibition. The measure will take effect on July 1 next year and is subject to revision after the war.
Washington reports a new Allied policy under General Foch with increased manpower and air power. Observers see a shift from strict defense to targeted local blows by French American British and Italian troops. American troops and air forces are described as changing the balance along the line, notably around Chateau Thierry and Soissons, with pilots sweeping German scouts from the sky.
Paris decree by Finance Minister Louis Klotz bans taking more than 1000 francs in French, Russian, or American paper money abroad. Extension to other allied currencies possible. Prohibition aims to stop enemy efforts to acquire banknotes in neutral states, which could threaten exchange stability. Also bans export of Russian or Balkan industrial stocks. United States and Switzerland have taken similar actions.
Washington July 5 American shipbuilders exceeded June objectives in the Independence Day tonnage drive. The Shipping Board said 474 464 dead weight tons were prepared to be sent overboard though 439 886 was planned. Eighty two ships were launched and eleven more were held up by a freshet in the Columbia River while two still stalled on the ways. Delays in engines held wooden hulls back but deliveries are expected to rise sharply in July and August.
Charles M Schwab director general of the Emergency Fleet Corporation announced that the fleet has delivered the equivalent of one 10000 ton ship per day for sixty days and 550000 tons dead weight in two months. He noted Eastern yards Hog Island and Bristol contributed none yet many ships will soon launch and he drove the first rivet in a large steel tanker at Moore shipbuilding Oakland.
The U S Army transport Henderson caught fire at sea and reached an Atlantic port without loss of life. Navy officials had sparse details and could not confirm direction or cause. The vessel was not reported badly damaged and its itinerary remained unclear.
Four American aviators Lieutenants Carlisle Rhodes S P Thompson Waldo Heinrichs and John Mitchell clashed with six German planes northwest of Chateau Thierry. One enemy craft fell as the Americans sheltered near the lines at 4200 meters. An hour later eight Americans fought fifteen Germans at 4700 meters. The German machines stayed higher but the Americans prevailed as one enemy aircraft dived earthward pursued by O Neil and Raible.
General Pershing reports patrols in Picardy and Chateau Thierry region engaged in Fourth of July offensive. American raiding party near Cantigny penetrates enemy wire, kills at least twenty Germans, captures three with machine guns. German counterattack near Bois De La Roche failed under allied artillery and rifle fire. 140 prisoners taken, part of total 500 previously reported. Air battles with German planes intensified as both sides traded conflicts.
Washington July 5 The American army transport Covington homeward bound after landing thousands in France was torpedoed and sunk Monday night in the war zone. Six crewmen are missing while others were landed in a French port. The ship sank after engine rooms were flooded and efforts to tow failed. The Navy cited no injuries among officers and crew who reached safety.
Washington July 56 Secr Daniels urged newspapers to refrain from publishing sailing times locations or suspected locations of ships in American waters amid German submarine activity. He noted advertising data can reveal departures as easily as news columns and asked publishers to avoid listing sailings of trans Atlantic vessels.
