Miss Jane Addams, head of the Hague peace congress delegations, returned from Europe aboard the St Louis. She urged neutrals to press peace terms, warned delays would harden terms, and noted mixed views in Germany France and Belgium. She planned to brief President Wilson and address Carnegie Hall on July 9.
Reports from his bedside indicate Archbishop James Edward Quigley of Chicago is rapidly sinking after a relapse and death is expected momentarily.
New York marked Independence Day with diverse events from City Hall Park ceremonies to neighborhood gatherings. The Americanization Day meeting at the College of the City of New York drew thousands of new citizens and officials, while suffrage demonstrations and a Liberty Island procession featured prominently.
In Baltimore the centennial mark was reached with the unveiling of three tablets on the Washington monument. The records note July 4 1815 cornerstone laying by Gov Levin Winder and Masons. General Eager and Samuel Smith are named as witnesses, with Lafayette among eight honored Marylanders. Oak trees at Mount Vernon Place were dedicated in their memory.
In Cleveland Ohio on July Americans celebrated Amer icanization Day with a reception for newly naturalized citizens at 10 a m. Speakers included Mayor Newton D. Baker United States Senator Atlee Pomerene and former Ambassador Myron T Herrick. Judge Manuel Levine welcomed newcomers on behalf of the Day Committee. The Rt Rev Thomas O Reilly offered a prayer for world peace.
On Independence Day in Paris Americans visited the tomb of Marquis de Lafayette in Picpus Cemetery. For the first time the French government officially participated with Raymond Poincare, Alexander Millerand, Théophile Delcassé and city officials present. Ambassador William Graves Sharp spoke of American sympathy for Lafayette and the ideals he embodied.
Katharine A Page daughter of Ambassador Walter Hines Page will marry Charles Greely Loring of Boston August 4 in the Chapel Royal at St James Palace. It will be the first strictly American wedding there with a private ceremony as the King and Queen will be absent due to the war.
Chicago figures report eight killed and 177 injured nationwide from July Fourth celebrations. Last year nine killed and 601 injured. Fire loss $66,550 versus $76,035 prior year. Injuries split among fireworks, cannon, firearms, gunpowder, torpedoes, toy pistols, runaways, and bomb canes.
A Macon dispatch reports a posse of about 100 farmers hunted for John Richey and Thomas Brooks after Si las Turner was killed at Gray. Two men named Will Green and his son were said to have been lynched during the violence, while officials doubt their link to the murder. Will Gordon, held for safekeeping, allegedly accused Brooks and Richey.
A dynamite blast late tonight hits the detective bureau area outside police HQ. A heavy door blew ten feet and windows shattered. no injuries. Lieutenant McNally shaken but unharmed.
