John Collier, executive secretary of the American Indian Defense Association, said in Chicago on July 4 that he spoke for the group in criticizing President Coolidge’s veto of the Indian oil leasing bill last week. He argued the veto could lead to federal moves exploiting Indian rights.
Bradley Beach mayor rules that spooning in automobiles is lawful if noiseless. The decision follows complaints from summer residents about cars with young people parked near homes until early morning.
A gaunt stray cat named Mummie returned to William R. Shoop, a Hulton Bridge ferryman, in Pittsburgh after an eight month trek from Hollywood Beach Florida. The cat had traveled about 1200 miles since accompanying Shoop’s daughter and son-in-law Jack Weber last November.

Caponi’s brother Tony was slain and the Konvalinka ticket ousted after a terror filled election day.

In Shenandoah Iowa a mock trial of Moses for murder linked to the Egyptian exodus ended with a hung jury. One obstinate juror in the First Presbyterian Church Sunday school class pressed for conviction. Claude Porter, Democratic Senate candidate, acted as judge. two church members read and interpreted the biblical evidence for defense and prosecution.
The four and a half year old Maung Tan Kyaing from Burma is hailed as a Buddhist prodigy who speaks perfect literary Burmese and preaches on ethics and bodily anatomy. Observers note his debates reveal genuine understanding, not rote recitation, and describe his intellect as extraordinary for his age.

Salem New Hampshire July 4 A 25 year old immigrant named Jack Foley of Billerica Mass was killed during elimination trials for a 200 mile race at Rockingham Speedway His car hit the 45 degree bank tore away 100 feet of rail and rolled down the bank Witnesses including Foley s wife watched as troopers restored order Officials attributed possible front wheel failure in the crash Another fatality occurred at Clinton New York when Mrs Alice Reynolds died after a racing automobile tore through a fence at the Fair Grounds injuring her niece and two drivers in nearby spots
A 15 year old boy, Clifford Mayer, was wounded by a stray bullet at 1810 Race street and treated after surgery at General Hospital. Police accuse Harry Kist of firing blank cartridges during Fourth of July celebrations. A woman, Helen Steinman, was grazed by a bullet in an auto at Eastern and Watson, with no source identified. Additional youths suffered burns from firecrackers and a shed fire on Central Parkway was blamed on fireworks.
Judge Hurley of Common Pleas Court held a makeshift habeas corpus hearing at the St Joseph Orphanage Cummins ville using a camp chair as a bench and a small tent as a courtroom. He granted release for Oscar Tappenhorn from county jail after testimonies from his wife and others. Continued on Fourth Page.
A summary of heat wave fatalities across states. Thirty one bathers and motorists died in Ohio and elsewhere, with three drowned near Baltimore and the Portsmouth Morning Sun publisher George M. Taylor among the dead at a Scioto River camp. Additional deaths occurred in Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, New Hampshire, and Maryland from car and train crashes and other accidents.
Three boys drown during Independence Day outings near Baltimore. Isadore Gold, 11, dies trying to save his 17-year-old brother Solomon in North Point Creek where parents brought them for a picnic. William Trabert, 16, drowns while playing water ball in Rock Creek.
George M. Taylor publisher of the Portsmouth Morning Sun drowned at the Scioto River camp in Rushtown while attempting to save his 11 year old daughter Betty. His body was recovered two hours later as his wife watched. His brother Harry E. Taylor published the Portsmouth Times and Ironton Tribune.
Six persons drowned in Kentucky as three others died in failed rescue attempts. Arthur Birdsong and a companion tried to save others when a motorboat overturned on the Tennessee River near Cadiz. a fourth swimmer reached safety. Cecil W. Bell, 13, dived into the Cumberland River near Burnside to save his brother Grady, 10, and they disappeared as their mother watched. William Lawson, 24, a switchman, also drowned in the Ohio River near Louisville on Sunday.
Five persons drowned in Indiana as they sought relief from a weeklong heat wave. A violent thunderstorm swelled rivers and creeks beyond their depths, washing away five people including 21-year-old William Moore of Indianapolis who was swept by an undertow.
