Seventieth ballot shows McAdoo 528.5 votes and Smith 334. Five hundred seventy three late votes block Smith. Surrender of both candidates could end the deadlock. Southern bishops meeting would follow unity if merger with Metrodiots gains approval to heal an 80 year breach caused by a bishop’s marriage to a slave owner.
Ohio’s Democratic delegates show deep division over allowing Al Smith to address the convention as Baker and Pomerene gains are debated. W. A. Julian pushes for polls to unite the Ohio vote while others demand a solid front against hearing Smith.
At the July 4 convention in New York delegates rejected Smiths plan for a forum and a 30 minute rostrum address. Withdrawal of Ralston and Cox freeing Ohio shifted votes with little effect. An executive session and Smith rostrum privilege were defeated after two hours of polling showing slim gains for leading candidates.
Senator Robert M. La Follette of Wisconsin announced as an independent candidate for President to the Conference for Progressive Political Action in Cleveland. He pledged to file his name with electors and outline a Progressive program while opposing immediate party formation. He defended his public record and promised clear positions on key issues as the convention debated whether to form a new party.
Two Fourth of July sessions at Madison Square Garden failed to produce a presidential nominee as McAdoo and Smith gained and lost support. Delegates debated executive sessions and a compromise ticket while moves to eliminate weak candidates gained momentum. Nine ballots left McAdoo with 52.8 percent and Smith with 33.4 percent as others trailed, signaling possible floor fights and potential elimination schemes to break the stalemate.

Washington July 4 Calvin Coolidge junior son of the President and Mrs Coolidge aged 16 developed an acute septic poisoning from a broken blister on the right foot after a tennis match Physicians were called in and the case remained serious though the youth showed some improvement He remained at the White House under constant care as the nation marked the President s fifty second birthday with messages of sympathy pouring in from across the country White House staff and doctors including Major James Coupal Dr Charles Richardson Colonel William Keller and Dr John Deaver attended the patient and no bulletin beyond the illness was issued pending further word.
At the Democratic National Convention in New York a bitter split between McAdoo and Smith factions grows. McAdoo leads in ballots but no nominee emerges as debates over the unit rule and possible gallery maneuvers threaten party unity amid talk of a permanent split and discord over the platform and religious issues.
The Southern Methodist Episcopal Church approved unification with the Methodist Episcopal Church South in a special session here, sending the plan to annual conferences for ratification with a two‑thirds vote tally near completion. If ratified, a joint bishops’ meeting would seal the merger uniting about 7,000,000 members.
In Port Arthur Ontario on July 4 a unanimous convention vote rejected the Missouri Synod invitation. The Finnish Evangelical Lutheran National Church of America will remain a national language institution, opposing German dominance in the Missouri Synod.
The Cleveland Hotel Men's Association extended an official invitation to the Democratic National Convention in New York to adjourn to Cleveland if the deadlock over a presidential candidate persists.
SAN LUIS OBISPO Cal July 4 Stanley Brown of Fresno Cal driving in a ten mile preliminary automobile race here today was killed when his car skidded crashed through the fence and turned over several times.
A. Stuart MacLaren, the British aviator, praised American assistance after arriving in Shanghai with two companions during a round the world flight. He thanked the U S naval service for supplying a new plane and aiding preparations and proposed a toast to American army flyers and the American nation at a Shanghai Club luncheon. He departed for Kagoshima, Japan, at 9 35 this morning.
Robert Mullen, held for the Frank Buchanan murder, confesses a conspiracy to rob the Bank of Clintonville. He implicates Elmer Hall George Farrell and Richard Newhouse in the June 11 crime and details a Newport to Lexington to Clintonville car theft and bank confrontation with cashier W C Gibson.
New York July 4 Senator Ralston withdrew from the Democratic Presidential nomination after pleas from Thomas Taggart and Indiana delegates. Taggart said harmony and party success outweighed any single entry, noting the early votes stood 20 for McAdoo and 10 for Smith as the field moved forward.
In Columbus Ohio on July 4 a car left the road near Hayden Falls and dropped 35 feet into a ravine killing two women instantly. Mrs Harry Chasin 40 of Marysville and Mrs Louis Wolfson 42 of Wichita Texas died in the crash. A man, Harry Chasin 35 husband of Mrs Chasin, was seriously injured with a fractured skull and internal injuries and remains unconscious in a Columbus hospital.
Three thousand Ku Klux Klan members from across New York and Pennsylvania gathered at a Binghamton park for a four day klorera. Public Safety Commissioner Yeomans said plans to prevent disturbance are in place. A parade in full regalia is set for the afternoon with masks not worn. The parade will be escorted by Binghamton police and 120 state troopers.
