Balloonist Dies in Fourth of July Springfield Balloon Ascension
Roy Walthausen 26 of Flint Mich died at the County Fair Grounds during a Fourth of July balloon ascent staged by the Eagles Lodge. Gas inflator caught the bag, flames rose, and he fell from about 120 feet, his parachute failing to deploy. He died at City Hospital with neck, chest and skull injuries. His father witnessed the tragedy and planned to transport the body to Saginaw.
