Fourth of July festivities in Washington and across the country saw unusually few casualties, eight dead and 365 injuries nationwide. The capital held quiet ceremonies with no fireworks violations, while Morse telegraph and Blodgett House site tablets were unveiled and Independence Day events paused congressional activity.
Paris July 4 celebration decorates downtown businesses with the American flag. The Empire State Society of the Sons of the American Revolution held a ceremony at the tomb of Lafayette in Picpus Cemetery with Deputy Consul General H. Cleveland Coxe and others. Ambassador Herrick, Dr. Abbott Lawrence Lowell, and Gabriel Hanotaux attended a reception for 1,500 Americans after the observance.
In Pittsburg, July 4, a car crashed into a crowd of schoolchildren gathering for a parade. John Greenawalt, 4, was killed. 12 youngsters aged 8 to 14 were hurt, plus one with a broken arm. Driver Abe Yuengling, 25, was arrested after claiming brake failure and loss of nerve.
A rumor claimed Major General Daniel Sickles died at the Rogers House during a reunion visit. Sickles confronted Brigadier General Hunter Liggett, calling the report a damned lie, and announced plans to depart for New York as his health improves.
At Gettysburg fifty years after the battle the last day culminated in a sunrise parade. Confederates marched with old comrades as Federal bands played Dixie and Marching Through Georgia. The event drew about 75,000 spectators for fireworks and a spirit of reconciliation among blue and gray veterans aided by federal and state support. Automobiles carried visitors from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and nearby towns.
A Civil War reunion scene unfolds with veterans from both sides reuniting around camp fires and a moving dawn parade. Confederate and Union veterans sing marches as Brigadier General Liggett leads a jubilant 5,000-strong chorus at the reunion campsite.
Washington July 4 A sweeping House probe of lobbying is set to begin with aims to examine integrity among members. Republican Mann Progressive Murdock and labor ally Nolan urged an expansive scope and access to counsel and funds, with Democratic leaders backing wide action while balancing currency legislation timing.
An Alton newspaper notes local reaction to a June 26 ceremony for John C. Kulp and Miss Minette Dewerff. The couple reportedly wed in 1912 but kept it secret, sparking village chatter and guest frustration over uncelebrated gifts. The notice, signed by the Kulps, urges gift return for dissatisfied donors.
In Ogden Utah on July 4 two electric interurban trains carrying pleasure seekers collided head on in Ogden Canon. Four people died and twenty one were injured including J M Anderson of Ogden Dan Grattan conductor J M Sherman motorman Peter W Buller of Salt Lake City. Reports say the motorman on the up train did not obey orders.
London reports Dr. Goldschmidt confirms a two day daytime link between Neustadt am Ruebenberg near Hanover and Tuckerton New Jersey using 150 kilowatts to cover about 3000 miles. The singing wheel allows precise wave length adjustment and secret messages without easy interception. An English firm of $5 million capital may form July 7 or 8 as Marconi and Goldschmidt vie for transatlantic business.
Ruth Alice Cole, a New York nurse, has announced engagement to Warren Clark Van Slyke a prominent lawyer. She previously married Charles E Halliwell first vice president of the American Tobacco Company who died in 1907 leaving a $5 million estate. Mrs Halliwell later wed William Porter who died in 1911 after an auto accident near Paterson New Jersey.
In Washington on July 4 a Pension Office case involving Frank D. Hester and a temporary clerk led to his suspension after allegations of romantic conduct during office hours. After an extensive review Pension Commissioner Gaylord M. Saltzgaber reinstated Hester, while the clerk left the service.
Chicago July 4 officials at a large packing plant announce a humorous policy after a stenographer resigns to marry. The firm will donate $50 to all department heads who wed and $2 to all other employees, with checks issued the day after the wedding.
A southbound Illinois Central train was robbed near Batesville by two bandits who escaped into the Tallahatchie River bottoms after looting the express mail and baggage cars. Authorities, with bloodhounds, hunted the robbers from 2 AM until after 6 AM, while passengers fought back in a negro coach and shots were exchanged. The haul was reported between 500 and 3500 dollars, with few registered packages aboard the mail car due to the holiday. The engine was abandoned twenty miles south at Pope, Mississippi.
At Johannisthal on the fourth of July a collision between two biplanes killed the German aviator Hessler and seriously injured Captain Friedel. The planes flown at about sixty feet collided in dusk and both crashed to the ground with Hessler dying shortly after. Friedel sustained a severe spinal injury.
Harry C. Knight of Indianapolis known as the Hero of the Indianapolis Speedway and his mechanician Milton MecCallis of Houston were killed or fatally injured when Knight's car blew a rear tire on lap 110 of a 200 mile race in Columbus. Knight reentered after engine trouble and was racing at about seventy mph when the crash occurred. John Jenkins of Springfield, Iowa followed and reportedly ran over Knight's body, which was severely mutilated.
Philadelphia July 4 five persons died and three injured when the Scranton Flyer struck a farm wagon carrying a picnic party near Quakertown. Victims include Mrs Jennie Costello Edwin Kane Katherine Costello Francis Costello and James Hannigan. The wagon toppled after the crash witnessed by thousands at the track. In the race scene Mulford won 200 mile dirt track record and prize money totaled 5000.
V Verbeck driving a Fiat won the Los Angeles to Sacramento Panama Pacific auto race in 11 hours 1 minute. Cr. C Willeford aided in Bakersfield and Verbeck relieved him. A persistent rumor claimed Harris Hanshue was killed in a ditch near Fresno. the report proved false as Hanshue was uninjured and continued after changing a tire.
In Winnipeg during a parade of Winnipeg and Manitoba soldiers home from Sewell maneuvers Canadian civilians seized an American flag. The flag was torn and dirtied amid a free for all injuring several civilians, while the American fled with police aid and the regiment kept order.
Medford Oregon July 4 Don Helms 20 was killed when his auto in a five mile race collided with another car and rolled over. Mechanician Marks was pinned under the car but escaped with a broken nose and minor bruises.
In Maysville Kentucky Mrs J N Teagar dies after a crash on the Chautauqua grounds. Oliver Hord and his mother Mrs Abner Hord are severely hurt when a heavy automobile overturns on a newly filled embankment and traps them. Mrs Teagar is removed from beneath the vehicle. Oliver Hord sustains head and chest injuries.
Leonard Wasserman a 38 year old dry goods merchant of Toledo was struck by an unlit automobile while riding his motorcycle near Point Place. He died tonight at St Vincent's Hospital from skull fracture and internal injuries suffered in the crash. The car driven by Theodore Hoefflinger was headed Toward Toledo when it struck Wasserman who was thrown about one hundred feet.
A car driven by E. L. Morrison with his wife and daughter and companions Charles Morrison and John Mercerell left a thirty foot embankment at Whigville and landed on the Ohio River and Western Railroad tracks. Mercerell, 32, unmarried, was killed. Morrison and others were badly injured.
