A parachutist, Tom Moore of Jacksonville Florida, died after plunging from a balloon bar at Hillside Park Belleville New Jersey before about 20 000 spectators. He refused a life belt and had been performing a triple drop with partner William C Gillen of Harris. Moore died while descending from about 3500 feet.
In Woodside near Oyster Bay a boy threw a stone at Colonel Roosevelt and Mrs Roosevelt’s car. The stone struck Mrs Roosevelt but caused no injuries. The ex-president stopped to pursue the boy but could not identify him and the culprit went to bed unspanked.
Special Cable reports the Count of Turin driving through a village when his car struck a cart of peasants who attacked the royal vehicle in retaliation. The automobile was wrecked and the count was roughly handled before gendarmes intervened and rescued him.
Corning New York July 4 a devastating wreck on the Lackawanna line left forty-one dead and between fifty and sixty injured when express train No. 11 collided with the rear of passenger No. 9 near Gibson three miles east of Corning. Engineer Schroeder blamed fogged signals for the disaster which demolished the passenger train and trapped passengers in burning wreckage. The crash halted an era of travel with a record crash cited as the railroad’s worst ever.
At Bachimba Station Mexico government troops renewed their assault to seize rebel positions in Bachimba canyon and surrounding high ground. Twenty six cannon and sixteen machine guns opened fire marking heavy early losses and a grim battlefield as rebels clung to key passes.
