The Cincinnati Fourth of July weekend featured many injuries from fireworks and several freak fires. Hospitals reported antitetanic serum demand as crowds packed parks and streets. Dozens of youngsters suffered burns and wounds from torpedoes, cannon crackers, and blank cartridges amid crowded events and a heavy police presence.
Captain John P. Green formerly vice president of the Pennsylvania Railroad has joined the pension list. His estimated annual pension of 13000 dollars would be the highest in the United States. Green was the company spokesman and asset to stockholder meetings. Charles EB. Pugh succeeds him as first vice president of the Pennsylvania Railroad system.
Andrew Carnegie sent $25,000 to the U S state department toward the Central American peace court at Cartaga Costa Rica. Work on the basidine is under way and the funds will be handed to the Costa Rican president.
The Right Rev. Charles D. Williams denounces benign patriotic organizations as harmless buncombe. He singles out the Daughters of the American Revolution Song of the American Revolution Colonial Dames and the Order of Cincinnati as examples. He criticizes Americans for false patriotism and urges prophetic critique of national character to avert decline.
The British steamer Whakatane en route to New Zealand was towed in a sinking condition and beached at Dover after a fog collision with the French steamer Circe off Dungeness. Circe was damaged but continued to Rotterdam. No lives were lost amid a rescue near disaster with 300 people aboard.
Rushed reports claimed the Queen City sank near Wheeling with heavy loss of life. The Cincinnati and Pittsburgh packet struck a raised dam wicket at McMechen, a small hull hole opened, water flooded aft, but crew kept calm and the ship moved on to Pittsburgh for permanent repairs. over 120 aboard.
A false alarm spread through Pittsburg when word arrived that the steamer Queen City had gone down near Benwood West Virginia with all aboard. Rumor spread as church dismissals began and was later corrected with Captain Browne reporting the vessel safe and returning up the river.
Rutherford Stuyvesant, brother of Mrs. Henry Whits wife of the American ambassador, died suddenly in Paris after fainting during a walk on the Champs Elysees. Physicians diagnosed an acute angina attack. he died hours later. The Fourth of July celebration at the American embassy tomorrow was canceled.
In Washington on July 4 a deadlock blocks four Auglaize county postmaster appointments. The county committee named W. A. Moxley at St Marys, August Gobrecht at New Bremen, August Herkenhoff at Minster, and W. B. Morey at Wapakoneta. Senators Dick and Burton clash over which nominees proceed. The pair join to back F. R. Ambrose for Hillsboro postmaster.
A Spanish column penetrated hostile tribal areas in Melilla and arrested several tribesmen who had attacked a Spanish policeman and those aiding a stoppage of work in mines and on the railroad. The operation followed orders from General Marina, Melilla governor, resulting in military demolition.
Knigts of Columbus councils from Ohio Indiana Michigan Western Pennsylvania and Kentucky attend the annual Cedar Point outing in Sandusky. The Norwalk council leads the event and the gathering will continue until the sole business session is held.
The dirigible Zeppelin landed at Metz Germany this morning after departing Friedrichshafen last Monday. Delays were caused by machinery damage and gale winds, extending the voyage.
Miss Rebecca Schugar of Reed Street becomes engaged to Dr Emmanuel Friedman of Denver Colorado after his intrigue with her photograph. The marriage is planned for July 4 and marks a notable cross country romance.
A skirmish at Shahabar sixteen miles northwest of Teheran saw revolutionists defeated by the shah's Cossacks. Twelve revolutionists died. one Cossack officer and three soldiers were killed. Reports say Sardarashd's Bakhtiaris may join the revolutionaries led by Siphatiar.

The battleship Danton was successfully launched at Brest France on July 4. An attempted launch on May 23 ended with an accident leaving the ship stuck on the ways.
Special dispatch from West Point reports Captain Thomas Franklin must face a court martial on charges of embezzling mill academy funds. Trial date not yet set.
President Taft views the new summer white house at Marblehead Neck Beverly today welcomed as a resident. The town decorates flags greet him and a large crowd crowds the route to the cottage amid church attendance and security detail. He plans a quiet season and return to Boston then West after September 19.
In Havana on July 4 Colonel Orestes Ferrera president of the house of representatives and Senor Monleon representative fought a duel. Rapiers drew blood with both men slightly injured after sharp Friday exchanges. The clash followed a challenged remark about honor and respect to members of the house.
Miss Annie Lawrie McBirney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Johnston McBirney of 1625 Prairie avenue, Chicago, is engaged to Joseph T. Ryerson, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Edcard L. Ryerson of 31 Banks street and Lake Forest. Ryerson is grandson of Donald G. Mitchell, known as Tk Marvel. McBirney’s Cincinnati ties and Chicago social prominence are noted.
A comptroller of the currency report shows between March 14, 1900 and June 30, 1909 Ohio organized 196 national banks. Of these, 96 have capital of 25000 dollars, 17 have capital between 25000 and 50000 dollars, and 83 have capital of 50000 dollars or more.
