Bandits Surrounded After Great Northern Express Hold Up
Three men held up the Great Northern west bound express near Wagner Montana on Wednesday afternoon. Sheriff Griffith with a posse of twenty surrounded them at Buck Allen's ranch forty miles south of Wagner. A siege may last into morning with possible reinforcements joining. The robbers believed to be cow punchers not experienced bandits. Loss estimated around seventy thousand dollars with other damages from explosions. Passenger Gertrude M. Smith treated for a minor arm wound.

Two Sergeants Kill One Another Then Take Own Lives
In Columbus Ohio on July 4 1901 Sergeant Elmer Johnson and Sergeant Thomas Spaulding both of the Seventeenth Infantry were found dead in their barracks room after a fierce quarrel while drinking. Johnson shot Spaulding through the heart then killed himself with the rifle, a third shot causing damage to the floor above. Both men had Santiago and Philippines service and had been drinking heavily the night before. Coroner’s post mortem held. inquest to be scheduled. Spaulding 35, Johnson 32. Johnson had warned of a memorable day in a card prior to the incident.
