Eleven year old Abbott Buegeleisen, of New York City, collects signatures from Clarence Chamberlin, Charles A. Levine, and four crew members of the America on a one dollar bill. He plans to obtain Charles A. Lindbergh’s signature to complete the set and frame the bill.
Dayton moves to a second federal liquor cleanup after weeks of enforcement led by Nathan S. Clark. Forty-one arrests and twelve warrants followed a raid that surprised bootleggers. Arkansas City Ark residents paddle to church as the town remains flooded for the third time this year. Levee breaches south of Pendleton and Medford spill water eighteen inches to ten feet deep, while scaffolding helps shoppers. About 2,700 residents live on the levee in tents as 200 homes were washed away in April and 120 more toppled.
New York July 3. John Hays Hammond, chairman of the non-Partisan National Civic Federation, cites over 60 000 voter questionnaire responses to condemn political ignorance. The federation plans an intensive campaign of individual voter service to boost turnout for the 1928 elections as legislatures and city councils face ballots.
The Rev. John Roach Straton prayed for forgiveness from New York newspapers at Calvary Baptist Church. He accused The New York Telegram The Graphic and The World of libelous coverage that mixed identities of his sons Warren and Jack Straton, triggering an onstage denial and a demand for accuracy.
John Warner a 58 year old animal trainer and owner of a large Newark animal farm was killed in his office as he lay in wait for looters targeting his prize chicken stock. His skull was crushed by a sledge hammer near a telephone. Detectives believe he had captured the thief and was summoning police. Warner was well known in circus circles and rented three lions to motion picture producers.
In Newport Kentucky a 15 year old, Printis Underwood, was fatally wounded by a blank cartridge fired from a revolver held by his father William Underwood. The boy was in the rear yard of Joseph Vanningburg when the gun discharged striking his right shoulder causing internal bleeding.
Receivers for the Julian Petroleum Corporation announced civil suits to recover usurious interest on 100 million dollars in pyramided loan pools banned for the company. They seek refunds and action against hundreds of involved individuals as civil suits proceed after partial filers last week. About 500 thousand dollars of interest has already been refunded, with total excess interest estimated up to 18 million dollars.
A ground floor store at 2807 Vine Street ignited fireworks causing dense smoke and a blazing inferno. Ruth Smith, 85, was burned on the head. several residents fled to the street as firemen rescued trapped tenants from the third and fourth floors. Damage estimated at 3500 dollars.
