At the National Democratic Convention in New York William Jennings Bryan faced a challenge from Cincinnati booster John L. Shuff who demanded a mention for Jimmie Cox. Bryan refused, saying he would have to name all acceptable Northern candidates, while noting his brother Charles was named. The exchange prompted tense moments and questions about coal contracts and antitrust issues as delegates debated Ohio’s Cox support and possible compromises.
Ames banker Parley Sheldon, 81, a longtime Democratic convention observer, calls the New York gathering the best thriller of his experience. The civil suit in Louisville seeks $300 reward for finding Anna Marie Bedinger, wife of Louis E Bedinger, disappeared June 22 1923. Judge adjourned July 16 after one plaintiff failed to appear. Bedinger contends officers earned no reward and that paying would violate public policy. Witnesses described discovery on an interurban car and prior police circulars.
Federal Commissioner Boyle labeled the synthetic dawn raids illegal and unheard of as four patrons arrested as material witnesses were arraigned. Two waiters also faced liquor possession charges after Director Yellowley warned of arrests during the Democratic National Convention.
William Gibbs McAdoo rises to 505 votes on the fortieth ballot at the New York convention, passing 500 to near a majority as Smith supports wavers and Oklahoma and Missouri shift allegiances. Bryan’s platform attack sparks unrest while the race for two thirds rule remains undecided and both camps hold veto power.
The first eastbound transcontinental air mail, piloted by Wesley L. Smith, landed in New York at 6:11 p.m. daylight saving time, six minutes behind schedule, with twelve mail pouches weighing 231 pounds. A California flower gift to Mrs. Calvin Coolidge accompanied the mail from Mrs. James L. Power.
The first westbound night flight air mail from Mineola reached the air mail field in San Francisco at 5 45 p m Pacific time after 34 hours 40 minutes in the air. Pilots H Winslow and W Huking landed five seconds apart after departing Reno at 3 17 p m. The full distance of 885 miles was flown in darkness with six crews.
Pilot S Short on the second westbound transcontinental air mail run lands in Chicago from Cleveland at 6:15 pm CST. He delivers fourteen mail pouches, drops three here and takes aboard five for the westward continuation.
In dense fog an American destroyer named La Vallette struck a reef off Ft. Rose about fifty four miles north of the San Francisco harbor entrance an hour before dawn. A naval radio report said she was off the reef and proceeding. A Chamber of Commerce Marine Department report stated she was undamaged.
The body of an unknown man was found hanging from a tree near Swan Creek on Wednesday morning. Laundry marks with the initials F H L appeared on the clothing. A Massillon store hat was found with the body. Coroner Henzler believes death was self inflicted.
New York July 2 The Appellate Division unanimously affirmed the conviction of William H. Anderson former State Superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League serving one to two years at Sing Sing for third degree forgery The court held the forged entry in league books could mislead legal review about funds received by Phillips the league solicitor and dismissed claims the act was harmless.
Chicago July 2 A man described as Herbert Holliday of Kansas City was arrested at Little Rock Arkansas for alleged complicity in Texas bank robberies. He is suspected to be one of two Texas ex convicts wanted in the 2 million dollar mail robbery June 12 at Rondout Illinois, postal inspectors said.
H G Hannon of Madeira Ohio was named in a warrant obtained yesterday by Benjamin H Lambers a 45 year old resident of 2358 Harrison Avenue charging reckless driving. Lambers a member of Lambers and Westerhoff printers says Hannon drove past a stationary street car at Cora Street and Harrison Avenue Tuesday night knocking him down and leaving him bruised.
Frank Ball escaped from the Ohio Hospital for Epileptics in Gallipolis Ohio and menaced J M Man ring with a meat cleaver before entering his residence and striking Mrs Man ring unconscious A posse and hospital attendants subdued Ball and he was jailed at the hospital
The Broadway Limited passenger train from New York to Chicago derailed one mile east of Lancaster Pennsylvania. Eight of nine cars left the rails injuring two women and one crew member. A special train transferred passengers to Harrisburg and the train resumed after a four hour delay. Sixty-nine or seventy two passengers were carried by the wrecked train.
Lieutenant Russell L Maughan arrives at Rosecrans Field St Joseph at 6 42 pm after a dawn to dusk coast to coast flight. He plans to depart at 8 15 am tomorrow to Dayt on a fuel stop then continue directly to New York.
The Associated Press reports that Stuart Mac Laren the British around the world flyer arrived in Shanghal at 11 25 this morning after his long journey.
The State Department announced the appointment of American and Mexican members to the Mixed Claims Commission. General Nathan L. Mile from New York and Aquiles Elorday will serve on the Special Commission alongside Ernest B. Parry of Lincoln Nebraska and Fernando Gonzales Roja.
