Sid M Adoo led on the first two ballots by a small margin as the convention adjourned until 9 30 this morning. The race for women's suffrage gains momentum withDemocrats backing Tennessee action and Republicans seeking Vermont ratification.
In Brussels on July 2 the bill granting women suffrage failed 89 to 74 in the Chamber of Deputies.
E A Gast county surveyor says no enforceable method exists to curb truck loads though law limits them. He cites road repairs stalled by last fall’s failed maintenance levy and notes Hamilton County roads in deplorable condition. A two year franchise was granted to Cincinnati Lawrenceburg and Aurora Traction to raise passenger rates. M Hanlon won a contract for a concrete retaining wall on Mile road at 2380 dollars. Cincinnati Mi and Manchester Traction to repair a culvert on the pike.
In San Francisco on July 2 the Democratic National Convention turmoil spilled into a fist fight between Senator Robinson and Paul M. Schwartz of Indianapolis a ticket engraver for Thomas Taggart. Robinson demanded Schwartz be discharged by the National Committee over ticket allotments while convention officials called it a misunderstanding.
An American destroyer was sent to Mersina to aid the Nilsons of Illinois held by Turkish nationalists. Admiral Bristol reported from Constantinople that efforts continue to secure information and protection for all Americans including Hadjin residents who had reportedly surrendered to nationalist forces.
New York July 2 officials focus on Miss Wilson as the likely owner of silk lingerie found in Joseph Bowne Fiwell's bedroom. She has been questioned six times by the District Attorney’s office. Elwell’s alleged whisky connections draw Prohibition agents toward a possible motive for the murder.
General Leonard Wood met with Republican Chairman Will Hays in New York and reportedly offered wholehearted support for Senator Harding's 1920 bid. Wood said he was in town as an escort for his daughter and denied political aims. Hays noted Vermont Governor Clement discussed Vermont ratification of the Anthony suffrage amendment and a possible special session.
Warren G. Harding will travel by automobile from Washington to Marion Ohio for a homecoming celebration Monday honoring the Republican presidential candidate. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Harding with several stops along the Lincoln National highway and a rest focused journey.
Marion Ohio prepares for Warren G. Harding home-coming with 25 000 out of town visitors and 100 000 for notification ceremonies. The Marion Civic Association says all available structures will house visitors in churches schools and public halls with sleeping space. Rates are set from 1 50 to 2 dollars per day and profiteering is denied by the Cigie Association.
Three officers from the Gramatan Hair Tonic and Hertha Product firms received 59 months in prison and $85,000 in fines for violating Volstead and internal revenue acts. They allegedly sold portions of 125,000 gallons of high grade alcohol withdrawn from warehouses meant for manufacturing purposes. They posted bail at $15,000 each and filed appeals.
In San Francisco on July 24 the Democratic National Convention committee read the Ireland plank and Chairman Glass humorously announced his own American brogue. The plank expressed sympathy for Ireland's government aspirations and passed with little reaction from delegates and galleries.
About 200 leading Republicans pledged campaign funds at a luncheon at the Hotel Gibson, the first general rally in Hamilton County since Warren G Harding's nomination. Notables present included J J Rowe and Mayor John Galvin, with talks praising Harding and plans for future campaign events and budget organization.
Democratic platform battles end with the bone-dry plank defeated 155% to 929% as Cochran and Hobson proposals fall short. Delegates erupt in applause while Bryan leads a dry revolt then watches the platform adopt the frame amid tumult and standing demonstrations.

Ireland gained surprising support with 40.2 percent backing recognition while wet and dry planks split. Senator Hiram Johnson observed as the convention leaned toward Wilson policies and prepared for final balloting between McAdoo Palmer and Cox.
Special Dispatch from San Francisco reports journalist Lardner criticizing the convention scene for the Republican front porch strategy. He notes Ada Waldrop on the organ, the nomination of Farnifold M Simmons, and jokes about Gamaliel Harding while commenting on the absence of decisive action and the daily rhythms of convention life.
Reported at the convention McAdoo backers sought late nomination on a fifth ballot while opponents failed to unite on a single rival. insiders said anti McAdoo forces could not find a candidate to rally behind, hampering the effort to block the President's son in law.
President Wilson rested as the Democratic National Convention in San Francisco debated the party platform and prepared for ballots on candidates. Reports to the White House by the Associated Press indicated no further briefings were requested as the President planned to retire before the platform was formally adopted.
Phillip de Ronda, president of the Oriental Navigation Co, announced the purchase of the Williams Pocahontas Coal mines in West Virginia. The move aims to secure bunker and cargo coal for the company’s steamers.
The Democratic National Convention opened ballots with McAdoo Palmer and Cox leading but far from nomination. Alabama and Arizona favored McAdoo, California split, Georgia all Palmer, and Texas solidly McAdoo. The roll call showed wide dispersal among candidates as the first ballot continued.
