British and French troops push gains along the Somme front in heavy fighting. Destruction of first-line trenches by artillery is reported, with German defenses stiff near the Ancre and at Gomiecourt and Beaumont Hamel. Weather noted as sunny after morning mist, as operations continued into Saturday afternoon.
Congress moves toward a record total of defense spending this session. Estimates show overall appropriations may reach about 1.65 billion dollars, with at least 500 million for national defense, driven by army and navy increases and a fortifications bill. Pittsburg July 2 Special. If a Mexican crisis sparks war and a volunteer call, the Pittsburg Police Department would form a new motorcycle squad. The current riders pledge to volunteer en masse, train daily, and seek a model rapid fire gun for motorcycle practice to serve as scout and patrol units.
Ohio National Guard orders move of the Second and Third Infantry Regiments and Battery C to Camp Willis tomorrow. Detailing commanders and home cities, the dispatch notes a fatal accident at Camp Willis when Dalton F. Nettleton 19 of Cleveland was crushed by a stone truck. Remaining mobilization details cover company locations and pending cavalry and artillery units.
American forces crossed the Rio Grande to pursue raiders after a raid on Fort Hancock Texas. The pursuit recrossed the river as the trail was lost and reports noted two horses seized near Old Fort Early before the raiders fled into Mexico. General Funston and General Bell indicated further steps would follow.
In Columbus Ohio July 2 a newborn named Juanita June Reever arrived weighing 12 1 2 pounds and possessed four teeth. Parents are Mr and Mrs Frank G Reever. The story notes a family tradition of full dentition in elders.

John Hally, a G A R veteran aged 106 from Woodsfield Ohio, issued a coon hunting challenge to any Ohioan over 80 on July 4. He credits a simple, tobacco free life and hunting success, saying he has outlived his father who died at 103.
