Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune reports the Akron airship exploded over the Atlantic Ocean at about 500 feet, killing Melvin Vaniman and four crewmen Calvin Vaniman, Fred Elmer, George Bourrillion, and Walter C. Gest. Wreckage floated near Brigantine Beach as authorities recovered two bodies by sundown.
A six month tally shows forty one aviation fatalities this year, surpassing the total for 1911. The list includes Curtiss aviator Rutherford Page in Los Angeles, Calbraith Rodgers near Long Beach, Ray Wheeler in St. Louis, and others, with European and American losses totaling fifteen victims this year.
Ohio Republicans settled on Judge E B Dillon of Columbus as their gubernatorial nominee after a hard fought balloting. Langdon Garford and others yielded as Dillon won on the final ballot while Langdon took the at large seat and Garford pressed a county slate. Roosevelt forces and Taft delegates clashed over Chicago platform drift.
Senator Burton, as chairman, gavelled the delegates to order at Memorial Hall for the Ohio Republican convention. The platform was read by General J Warren Kelfer of Springfield, former speaker with the resolutions committee, amid a crowded gallery and fading attendance from heat and weariness.
The Democratic convention in Baltimore nominated Woodrow Wilson for president and Indiana’s Thomas R. Marshall for vice president after three ballots. Governor Marshall was selected as running mate at 1:56 this morning, amid a busy, reshaping of party leadership and platform debates.
Nebraskan triumphs as Marshall is proclaimed nominee by acclamation and Governor Burke’s name is withdrawn. Bryan plans a valedictory speech and hints at campaign realignment, while delegates depart weary yet upbeat after a raucous gathering.
