In a record hot day historians cite hundred deaths and millions afflicted as New York City endures a brutal heat spell. Hospitals overflow with patients while relief is scant and temperatures briefly drop in some areas.
Reports from the Weather Bureau show persistently high temperatures across the affected area with only sporadic relief from thunderstorms. Forecasters predict a 4 to 5 degree fall in 48 hours but temps remaining above 90 in most places, while the West Indies disturbance brings limited relief to the coast.
New York City cooled by late afternoon storms after record heat from Sunday. Rainfall brought temperature drops of about 10 degrees between 4:30 and 8 p.m. The storms caused fires from lightning strikes but reportedly no deaths or injuries. Battery Park winds intensified toward Bowling Green as the deluge moved through lower Broadway.
A heat wave caused multiple prostrations and several fatalities. Squire William E. Paul, 60, died at home near Sedamsville from heat exhaustion. Henry Linnenkamp, a magistrate, died after collapse. Others including Co. A. Culbertson of Standard Optical, Xavier Haushaber, and more were hospitalized with heat illness. some expected to recover.
Special Despatch reports the United States Government will begin a formal investigation into the wrecking of the Seventh National Bank. Captain W S Ball, formerly South Carolina district attorney, will lead inquiries into bank entries and check kit methods, with civil action pursued against any violators.
William Lenoir, expert for the Tennessee Kentucky oil syndicate, returns from inspecting property in Wayne County Kentucky and Mentress County Tennessee. The report is not public but is believed favorable as the company plans to reorganize its $80,000 capital stock and resume operations at once.
The Mount of Blessings Bible School Chapel hosts unsectarian revival meetings on the new tabernacle grounds at Mount of Blessings Young and Ringgold streets Mt Auburn. Rev Martin Wells Knapp leads 55 tents and 200 guests as 17 denominations gather for the June 30 opening drawing Sunday crowds from 25 states. Evangelsists include Rev B Rees E A Ferguson W Godbey and Andy Dolbow with a focus on back to the Bible and salvation through repentance restitution and the Holy Spirit.
In Indianapolis the case exposes a conspiracy to send defenseless sound minded people to asylums for the insane. Witness fees funded testimony while the Attorney General leads the investigation. A black girl and John Ross were released after being declared sane. Victims include boy victims of the alleged combine seeking protection.
Albert Johnson brother of Tom L. Johnson died at his Brookyln home after a three week heart illness. He led three cent fare efforts in Philadelphia and never approved a strike in twenty five years of railroading. He started as a conductor in Indianapolis and built a career shaping Cleveland and Philadelphia transit. He was 39 and leaves a wife four children and aging mother.
In Indianapolis on July 2 the John Ross Insanity hearing freed Charles Ross after evidence suggested a large alleged insanity trust among dispensary officers and justices. The probe aims to indict those involved and address alleged wrongful incarcerations of friendless individuals including Miss Lilian Parks.
