A 5 am blaze in Summit New Jersey caused $150000 damage. A barn on Union Avenue owned by V Vicari caught fire and spread to a nearby frame building and ten adjoining stores and dwellings. The Agate block on Union Avenue owned by William G Sheldon burned completely. About 100 residents in apartments above stores were forced into the street with little saved.
In Badalona a large crowd demonstrated for revision of trials of alleged anarchists held at Mont Juich fortress. Rioting followed a meeting. gendarmes arrived and faced volleys of stones, injuring many and some fatally.
In Chicago on July 2, workers at a mass meeting formed the Packing House Employees Union with 500 members and a goal of 15,000 by September to back demands for better hours and higher wages. Officers’ names were kept secret as talks continue.
General Harrison Gray Otis of California arrives in Washington on private business. He praises Major General Otis for the campaign in the Philippines and says rebels have been halved to about 15,000 armed men due to deaths, wounds, and desertions. Madrid July 2 The Minister of War General Polavieja after a long conference with Premier Senor Silvela agreed to reduce the active army strength estimate from 107000 to 8000 men as part of the budget.
A monster demonstration and banquet at the Tacon Theater will feature Americans and Cubans. General Ludlow will toast the U S president, Governor General Brooke will give the second toast, and other toasts honor the Army Navy absent soldiers and Independence Day with General Brooke presiding.
Frankfort Ky July 2 The governor countermanded the order for troops after learning the informant over the telephone exaggerated the need. No authority asked for troops and a fakir nearly cost the state thousands of dollars.
R. G. Erwin announced as successor to H. B. Plant as President of the Plant System. Erwin, formerly of Atlanta and now in New York, has been closely tied to Plant interests and will oversee roads and steamship lines.
Police in Delaware Colorado recovered a cache of stolen goods from a residence burglary. Four girls aged 7 to 10 from respected families are suspected, having deposited spoils with a 17 year old accomplice. Frank Neff of the First National Bank reported the break in upon returning from Lakeside. Authorities expect arrests to occur Monday.

Philadelphia July 2 A local paper says mutiny broke out on the cruiser Panther while en route from San Juan Puerto Rico to League Island navy yard. Twenty four men were placed in irons after desertions and food protests. Navy Department has been notified but officials offered no details.
In Marseilles on July 2 police arrested several after minor disturbances over Dreyfus affair discussions. Reports note tensions related to the controversial case and public debates.
Three boys were drowned while swimming in the Cedar River below the lower dam this afternoon as a swift current swept them away.

At Tremont House in Muncie Indiana John Sullivan attacked George Myers with a knife wounding him near the jugular vein. Myers from Wapakoneta Ohio. Sullivan boarded a Lake Erie and Western freight train but was captured by a Marshall at Redkey before escaping on a Panhandle freight. The case turns on mistaken identity.
The naval arsenal at Talcahunao near Concepcion, Chile, was burned to the ground on Friday. Loss exceeds $50,000. Authorities suspect an incendiary aimed at concealing defalcations by government officials.

Bishop John P. Newman of the Methodist Episcopal Church with episcopal residence in San Francisco is critically ill at his Saratoga cottage on July 2. The report notes his condition as serious and under medical care.
