London July 1 report says the gun crew of an American liner fired on two German submarines during a voyage from the United States to England. One periscope reportedly shattered. a third sub sighted at distance and submerged. Passengers praised the gunners and a former British navy man hit a bulls eye on a barrel in practice.
A Peking dispatch June 18 says General Chang Hsun, Anhwei military governor, has assumed dictatorial power while President Li Yuan Hung is restrained in the palace. Reports note provinces rebelled, then halted military preparations, amid calls for new parliamentary elections after Li dissolved Parliament.
New York social circles announce Miss Florence Lincoln engaged to Willi A. Rockefeller son of William G. Rockefeller. Greenwich Connecticut home noted as the setting. Cyril Maude’s daughter Margery Maude engaged to Joseph Warren Burden, with Burden in army service. Maude formerly lead actress in Grumpy and supporting Lady Windermere's Fan.
Washington July 1 Latest Red Cross tabulations show Delaware tops all states with a five cent rate. Other states include Connecticut two dollars and five cents Ohio one dollar eighty-one Massachusetts one fifty Rhode Island one thirty seven and many others with lower figures.
New York July 1 Henry P Davison chairman of the Red Cross War Council announces a special commission to Russia to deliver medical supplies surgical instruments and to study relief methods for wounded soldiers and needy civilians. The twelve member panel includes Dr Frank Billings and William B Thompson with experts in medicine public health and social service.
Niagara Falls July 1 dispatch details a belt line Great Gorge trolley crash. Dead include Marion Lloyd Schmucker Akron Ohio J R Mack Princeton Indiana and others from Jamestown Syracuse and Chicago. Dozens injured and many missing as car plunged into Niagara River with over fifty aboard.
The Holland America line ship Nieuw Amsterdam sailed from Rotterdam with no cargo or mail after five months idle. The ship carried 240 in first cabin, 330 in second cabin, and 340 in steerage, with few American passengers and crew recruitment proving difficult.
Prominent NSW legislator Winchcombe, a passenger aboard the Mongolia which hit a mine off Bombay on June 23, died in hospital after suffering exposure and overstrain while rowing to shore. Twenty three lives were lost in the disaster.
The British sea-going tug Florida capsized June 28 off Pernambuco while en route from Rio de Janeiro to London. The captain and five sailors drowned including E. J. Heckroth of New York and W. H. Luptren, an Indian from Kentucky. Four crew members were saved.
Paris July 1 The French steam er Himalaya of the Messageries Maritimes with 204 passengers and crew was sunk due to an explosion in the Mediterranean. One hundred seventy six persons were saved. The Himalaya was 5 620 tons gross and was last reported at Marseilles.
The Old Dominion liner Hamilton ran aground in dense fog off Craney Island near Norfolk.Wrecking tugs stand by at dawn and the vessel is reported in no danger while remaining aground.
The bulletin reports Ohio and several Midwest states with fair conditions Monday and likely Tuesday. It lists current highs lows and precipitation across stations such as Montreal Denver Chicago Memphis and Omaha. A July 1 1917 Cincinnati record is noted with temperature and wind data and comparisons to prior years.
Three patrolmen were shot while answering a riot call on Sixteenth street and Bois Merie avenue. One officer was seriously wounded as a crowd of black residents fired on the responding patrol. Major Kavanagh ordered Illinois National Guard troops to the scene, sending Troops B and E.
Athens July 1 Liberty of opinion will be a cardinal principle of the new government of Premier Venizelos. Officials opposed to the Premier who have observed a passive attitude and fulfilled their duties will retain their positions. Those who interfered in party politics and used their positions against the Liberal cause will be dismissed and prosecuted. The minister of war has ordered all officers and men to take an oath of fidelity to King Alexander.
Washington July 1 Congress moves to seal the dry problem with a compromise for food control. Senate plans rapid action on the liquor ban while revising the war revenue bill. Hoover and Chamberlain discuss amendments to speed passage, with Gore seeking broader prohibition powers.
Berlin dispatch reports Russian troops opening a heavy attack along an eighteen and a half mile front on the Stripa line. German official claim heavy Russian losses and retreat. The update notes France trying to regain gains on the Chemin Des Dames and Meuse sectors with multiple assaults repulsed.
A Missouri inventor claims a cast steel and aluminum engine will revolutionize aviation and win the war. Tests under government supervision in St. Louis aim to prove a machine that may fly from St. Louis to Lexington, Kentucky, by August 6 with a 12 passenger craft and a single advanced engine. The plan includes an excursion to London and back in under seventy hours to demonstrate war utility amid international interest.
Boston July 1 riotous Socialist parade declared a peace demonstration. Uniformed squads broke ranks, red flags and Socialist banners were trampled, headquarters looted and set aflame. Police reserves halted the disturbance after ninety minutes with numerous arrests. federal agents detained several speakers for unpatriotic remarks.
The Special Defense Committee of the Chamber of Commerce warns that war needs will limit steel for general business. It urges using wood and concrete where possible, postponing steel work, and sourcing materials locally to ease rail congestion as production shifts to war needs.
