Judge Kirkpatrick declares the Shipbuilding Company insolvent with funds depleted and directors unable to raise capital. A receiver will be appointed as bondholders seek protection, while subsidiaries finance via indorsements and leases. The court notes the company owns most subsidiary stocks and controls plants leased to them.
A terrible explosion in Union Pacific Mine No 1 at Hanna Wyoming traps miners and rips through timbers. Two hundred eighty two men went underground at dawn. only 48 accounted for by nightfall with 234 dead and many wounded. Rescue crews struggle for air and access amid debris and toxic gases.
Lieutenant William K. McCue of the First Infantry U.S. Army is detained at Fort Sheridan after a Chicago hotel confrontation with his supposed Cincinnati wife. He denies marriage claims and says the Cincinnati woman is his cousin. a reconciliation attempt was underway.
New York June 30 The United States Shipbuilding Company directors met to act on President Nixon's resignation. Nixon stated he would remain on the board. George R B Sheldon said a receiver appointment would not hinder reorganization or the completion of current contracts. Nixon said receivers would help the plants reach peak efficiency and not disintegrate.
June 30 from Rome reports Pope Leo XIII enjoying the Vatican gardens for an extended drive and checking on vineyard prospects. He returned to his apartments without fatigue and received several bishops. French attachés Mourry and D Harpoul plan a Paris vacation until October, asking doctor Lapponi if it will be interrupted.
In Austin on June 30 Comptroller R M Love was shot and killed in his State House office by ex employee W G Hill who entered with a letter of endorsement. Hill was wounded in a struggle and died later as Love died about an hour after the attack.
Pittsburg reports river coal traffic reaching over 2,415,000 bushels in a day, completing seven days of shipments totaling 22,000,000 bushels. Officials anticipate roughly the same volume to depart tomorrow as the record pace continues.
A search of St. Peter's Cathedral records confirms the marriage of Lieutenant William K. McCue to Miss Westcott on June 7, 1899. Father Mackey recalls the ceremony and church archives verify the union, despite prior denials. Mrs McCue has used her maiden name in business dealings, and her mother Mrs Leonard Westcott was not available for comment.
Mrs McCue telegraphed her husband s father Judge Jas G McCue at Sharpsburg about the state of affairs Judge McCue wrote to the United States War Department asking that his son be arrested
In Scottsboro Alabama a mob took Andrew Diggs a black man from jail and hanged him after an attempted assault on Miss Alma Smith nineteen daughter of Dr B B Smith. The sheriff fired at the mob wounding himself in the leg and arm while protecting the jail and delivering keys to the cell. A doctor treated the sheriff's wounds which were not dangerous.
Detectives and the coroner remain at an impasse in the four day old infant Rogers death case. The mother Mrs. Anna Oppenheimer denies danger to the child and refuses to name the father while nurses testifying describe clean care.
An evening blaze on the fourth floor of the J F Dietz Co desk factory at 36s West Pear street caused about 1500 in damage. The fire likely started from spontaneous combustion in the varnish department after a cigar stump was dropped in a basement grate near the livery stable at George street.
Colonel Rochfort reports May 31 Abyssinian forces surprised Mad Mullah's troops near Feyd killing about 10,000 spearmen and seizing cattle camels. Watering places blocked south of Gerlogubia Galacti, aiding pursuit while the Mullah moves through a waterless area. Rumors of British defeat rebutted by survivor reports from Berbera.
A telegram reports the marriage of Beryl Whitney daughter of J Parker Whitney of Rocklin to Thomas H Graydon Cincinnati Harvard full back. The wedding follows earlier East Coast social rumors and linked Elopement history with the Whitney family and Miss Ely's Riverside Drive school.
Mrs. F Adams Jr wife of a tobacco company VP reports she was sandbagged and robbed of 18500 on a train from Chicago to Milwaukee She had gone to Chicago to draw 25000 inheritance from First National Bank spent some debts and returned with 16000 cash and a 2500 deposit certificate before being struck in the toilet by an unknown woman and knocked unconscious.
Kiel June 30 The United States Squadron sailed from Kiel at 6 p m with German ships saluting and Americans replying The flagship Kearsarge Chicago and San Francisco will sail through the Cattegat to Kalundborg for two days then via Kiel Canal to Brunsbuttel rendezvous south of Spithead and reach Portsmouth in July Officials note relief from frequent uniform changes and long duties while praising Emperor William’s apparent sincerity and openness The British Foreign Office adjusted Independence Day arrangements to fit the squadron’s schedule
In Columbus Ohio on June 30 the State Sinking Fund Commissioners Walter D Guilbert Isaac B Cameron and John M Sheets paid the last installment completing the payoff of the states bonded indebtedness The paper notes a remaining payable bond lost to be presented for payment and a reducible fund though technically not debt now remaining in reserve

He urges Judge Dempsey to run for the Ohio Supreme Court and advocates endorsing a U.S. Senate candidate at the state convention, while meeting with M. E.
