Atlantic City editors announce fashion shifts with knickers replacing short skirts for women this season while Detroit reports men to wear brighter, more ornate colors. The Na mal Association of Merchants outlines the program as the annual convention opens.
In Highlands New Jersey January 29 seventeen rum ships including three steamers and fourteen sailing vessels lay idle as ice chokes Ambrose Channel trading. Observers note little activity after a brisk period on Friday and Saturday as local runners face halted plans due to ice in Sandy Hook Bay.
Frank J. Murasky grants Mme Margaret Matzenauer an interlocutory divorce from Floyd Glotzbach a San Francisco chauffeur. Both allege cruelty and quarrels since their 1922 Carlsbad marriage. Matzenauer accuses him of infidelity while Glotzbach cites delay and neglect in the marriage as grounds.
In New York on January 29 a divorce hearing for Mrs. Tellegen began before Referee Mahoney. The session was behind closed doors with no principals present. Witnesses Bogard and Larsen testified about visits to Tellegen's Long Branch bungalow and social scenes with a dark eyed woman.
Two white men entered Harry Bowman’s saloon on Twelfth street and Broadway at night. One held Bowman and six patrons at gunpoint while the other took $74 from the register. The crooks stated the loot was “Nothing much.”
The Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce plans a city slogan contest with a prize for the best line to be used in business ads and mail matter. President D C Keller and executive VP W C Culkins organize details. Citizens will be invited to participate and the contest opens soon.
John D. Rockefeller Sr. and Jr. have ceased financial support to the Anti-Saloon League of New York State. Raymond Fosdick, a Rockefeller representative, testified during a district attorney inquiry into the league’s finances. State Superintendent William H. Anderson’s questioning was postponed to Wednesday.
Florence May Dibble, accused of marrying three soldiers while her husband in the Navy, was arrested in Pittsburgh after a DOJ search spanning Milwaukee and other cities. Charged with defrauding the government by collecting war allotments of 15 dollars monthly from each husband, with the government adding an equal amount. A hearing is set before the US Commissioner, with potential transport to Albany for trial.
The Notre Dame du Bon Conceil convent at St. Gedeon Lake St John Quebec burned Saturday night into Sunday in the thirteenth blaze at Canadian institutions. A nun woke to smoke and all nuns escaped safely. The nunnery, founded 25 years ago, housed many pupils and will be rebuilt at once.

First Lieutenant James D. Summers of Selfridge Field fell from 19 000 feet to 900 feet above ground before regaining consciousness and landing safely. A house was blown up by a mine and several other residences were set ablaze including that of Mr. Flanagan, relation to President William Cosgrave, and homes of Messrs Money and Brewster, directors of The Irish Independent.
In Hamilton Bermuda on January 29 six crew members were seriously injured by a boiler room explosion aboard a ferry between Hamilton and Somerset. Some passengers leapt overboard in a panic and several are feared drowned.
A car driven by Joseph Ledford 28 cafe owner 708 East Pearl street ran amuck on West Eighth Street Viaduct. It collided with George G Miners Kroger official 4071 West Eighth street wrecking Miners car and Ledford’s car leaped the sidewalk breaking railing. Two passengers fled. Ledford jailed for reckless driving and possible liquor charge after police found a bottle with liquor in the car.
Colonel William Littauer of New York filed suit in Paris to stop his daughter Catherine Louise Littauer from marrying William Eldon Doeller, an American with a New York auto business, arguing French law requires parental consent. Doeller followed the couple to Europe after Miss Littauer was taken abroad.
Milton A. Solomon of New York, a prisoner at the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary, killed himself on January 23 by tying a bed sheet to a cell girder. The warden confirmed the death but did not explain the late announcement. Solomon had been convicted in New York on federal motor theft charges and had been a key witness in the prison dope ring case.
Robert Woods Bliss of New York, Third Assistant Secretary of State since 1921, is nominated by President Harding to be Minister to Sweden succeeding Ira Nelson Morris who has resigned. J Butler Wright of Wyoming is nominated to succeed Bliss as Third Assistant Secretary. Wright has long service in diplomacy and is 45, Princeton graduate.
Greensburg Ind Jan 29 William F Robbins formerly Prosecuting Attorney here was killed instantly today when a B&O passenger train struck his automobile at a railroad crossing near Greensburg Indiana police said Robbins was one of several people in the car and the train crew reported no one else was seriously injured.
In Duesseldorf on January 29, French occupation authorities start mass arrests and expulsion of top German state officials and bureaucrats for disobedience. About a hundred are expected to be escorted to unoccupied Germany as The Hague convention cited. The strike by Ruhr rail workers and telegraph staff cripples communications with German network partly down.
Paris reports confirm France will supervise press dispatches from occupied Germany to prevent false news. Premier Poincare states troops will stay in the Ruhr as long as needed for reparations, but not longer. The arrangement is not censorship but may invite concern from correspondents and League of Nations meetings continue.
