A distressed 18 year old Grace Evans de Witt killed herself with carbolic acid at 1008 West Seventh Street after declaring she would part from John. Mrs Dollie May Golday alerted neighbors. a hunt found a bottle, drained by De Witt, emitting carbolic odor as bystanders intervened.
In New Orleans on January 29 H J Mason of New York shot James Dunn of Cincinnati during a dice game quarrel at the St Charles Hotel. Dunn, a United States Playing Card Company representative, was struck in the forehead and is unconscious. Mason fled but was arrested in the lobby by the hotel detective.
The House adopted Gillespie's resolution seeking Interstate Commerce Commission facts on alleged coalitions among major railroads including Pennsylvania, Norfolk and Western, Baltimore and Ohio, Philadelphia Baltimore and Washington, Northern Central, and Chesapeake and Ohio. debate over rules followed as Dalzell opposition surfaced.
The funeral of Major General Joseph Wheeler U S A retired honored in Arlington on his birthday. Presidents Roosevelt and family led mourners as thousands stood with uncovered heads. In Long Branch New Jersey on January 29 Charlena Pemberton shot her father Dr H Pemberton passing bullet through the back of his head. The injury was not serious. The physician and his wife are divorced and the children. a boy and a girl, are cared for nearby. The shooting occurred as the daughter visited her ill brother and is said to be accidental before she turned the weapon on herself.
Immigration officials on the steamer Finland discovered a trunk with $100,000 in Hungarian bonds and railway securities hidden beneath a false bottom. The trunk, tied to Isaac Hecher, a grain merchant, was linked to Moises Greenberg who vanished aboard, prompting a wider inquiry. The Hungarian government will be notified of the seizure.
Miss Shelby Converse daughter of Rear Admiral Converse navy was thrown after clinging to a runaway horse for three miles on the Cabin John Bridge road. The curb chain broke and the horse dashed toward the city colliding with a truck team. She was unconscious then revived at home.

Rufus Johnson, labeled colored, admits murdering Miss Florence W. Allinson at her Moorestown New Jersey barn on January 18 after days of denials. He says an unknown woman fed the cow, then attacked Allinson, bound her with a strap, and killed her before fleeing with valuables and the savings bank taken from the child.
Boston January 29 Two fishermen Charles Matheson of Boston and Charles Hemeon of Shelburne Nova Scotia were found unconscious in a dory after drifting over 200 miles from the Quannapowitt in dense fog and gale. They were picked up by the Flora S Nickerson and brought to port in serious condition.
