Washington January 29 The Senate will devote most of the week to the peace treaty with no interruption from appropriation bills The vote is set for eight o clock next week open session speeches are planned for every day except Monday Senator Berry Spooner Rawlins Money and Chilton will speak on resolutions concerning expansion Friends of the treaty remain hopeful while some favor a compromise like the Sullivan or Bacon resolutions If beaten the plan is to reconsider and possibly discuss postponing action for an extra session.
A gang of 26 track workers in the Gallitzin tunnel west opening were surprised by an approaching locomotive. Smoke blinded them as they moved from the north to the south track. One man died instantly, another died later in Altoona Hospital, and sixteen were seriously injured. Victims were David Wilt, 40, and Thomas W. Sanker, 25, both of Gallitzin.
Six prisoners held on felonies escaped after James Campbell a trusty unlocked cell doors and sawed a rear window bar. Robert Gibson and Mitchell Reamer, accused of criminal assault on young girls, remained confined. Carnahan Reed and Cummins were recaptured near Alliance.

The Sixty ninth Regiment of New York City, in cas p in the South since May, arrived in Cleveland at 9 this morning from Huntsville Alabama. The troops attended a Mass at the Catholic Cathedral where Rev Father Daly conducted a special service. The regiment left for the East over the Lake Shore at 11. Cleveland pastor Rev George Vahey praised the soldiers loyalty and patriotism.
The New Orleans body found near Ft. St Philip is identified as Captain Sturtevant, pilot of the launch Paul Jones. The clothes and position suggest he was off duty and asleep when he died. the boat likely wrecked by an explosion during the night.
A five member Robson family and a hired man perish when their creaking craft overturns in Lake Erie near Bass Islands while transporting a five year old grave across the lake. A snowstorm and drifting ice are suspected causes as the wreckage is recovered on the Canadian shore.

Canton Ohio January 29 Attorneys for Mrs George plan to prove an alibi with a witness who says he stood on a bridge near the Saxton shooting, saw Saxton ride by, heard shots, and then met Mrs George walking toward the scene, claiming she could not have reached the scene in time. The arraignment on Monday is anticipated as the court is likely to overrule the plea.
A steamer crew found a man’s legs protruding from ice in a harbor slip. An axe freed the body of William Dormer, deck hand on the Walter L. Frost, who likely fell headfirst from the gangplank and froze alive.

About three quarters of all whips are made at Westfield Mass by the American Whip Company which has absorbed twenty five firms. Prices have been cut by competition and overtures have been made to smaller concerns to join the American trust.
An enormous silver-tip grizzly bear escaped its cage during a tooth extraction attempt on stage in Omaha. The enraged animal injured its master, Paul Batty, lacerated Stagehand McDonald, tore theater manager Jake Rosenthal’s coat, and caused chaos before being subdued with heated irons and bound in the cellar.
In Columbus Ohio on January 29 Constable Thomas and helpers attempted to execute a replevin warrant for Marshall Jordan a colored poundmaster. Jordan blocked entry Jennie Jordan his sixteen year old daughter fired a shotgun from an upstairs window striking Ray Dennis a helper. Authorities later returned with force arresting the Jordan family.
A dispatch to the Daily News reports Colonel Kitchener abandoned the chase of Khalifa Abdullah into Kor dofan where Abdullah has been warring with tribesmen. The pursuit was originally sent in by Colonel Kitchener and his column.
William Koutnik of Hoboken claims he delivered a package to the Knickerbocker Athletic Club address on December 23 tying him to a key clue in the Adams poisoning mystery. Police doubt his tale but officials discuss the possible arrest based on his identification of a man linked to the case.
