The German Emperor William issued a message promising to force peace by the sword as entente capitals expect peace moves. The birthday was marked by demonstrations at German headquarters with the Empress and Prince Henry present and an order of general amnesty proclaimed.
Louise Sachen, 19, leaves a frozen Kuyukuk cabin for New York after six weeks by dog sled steamship and train. Daughter of miner Nick Sachen who saved gold to fund her education and culture, she hopes to see America’s high buildings shows and marvels.

J B McNamara, serving a life term for the Los Angeles Times Building bombing, started work in the State prison jute mills after twenty four days in the dungeon for refusing to obey orders. He had been in the prison laundry prior.
John Comstock of Elyria Penitentiary serving fifteen years for attacking his mother turned over his $100 savings to be used for her burial when he was told she was dying. He told Warden Preston E. Thomas it’s the least he can do but it cannot atone for the wrong he did her.
The Arizona Supreme Court ruled that Thomas J. Campbell, a Republican, is the de facto governor, ousting Democrat G. W. P. Hunt who had claimed re election. The decision came late today in Phoenix.
Sheriff Allen Walton testified during the Spanell murder trial that Harry J. Spanell, in the Alpine Jail, confessed killing his wife Crystal Spanell and Major Butler. Spanell cried as he declared he was ruined and that others forced him to commit the acts. The judge overruled a challenge to voluntariness of the reply. Butler, recently named for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, was still addressed as Major.
The Congress of Constructive Patriotism endorsed a universal military training program and navy realignment to Pacific primacy. It urged woman power development, nationwide patriotism education, and strong Americanization to end dual citizenship. Admiral Peary spoke on air power and air tactics in defense.
Columbus January 27 Governor Cox issued his first proclamation urging Ohio citizens to observe Thrift Day on February 3. He said thrift can curb waste and protect resources, noting easy spending accompanies prosperity and that saving is a national movement.
Boston on January 27 witnessed a mass action as about two thousand housewives opened a strike against the potato price. They voted to push the protest until prices drop from 70 cents per peck to 40 cents.
A major blaze in Pittsburg's Fifth avenue shopping district destroyed nearly a city block. Originating in the Philadelphia Company Building, the fire was fought through the night with dynamite used to halt spread. The Nixon Theater matinee proceeded on time despite fears of panic.
Four people were killed and eighteen injured when two interurban cars collided between Strongsville and Brunswick on the Cleveland, Akron and Western Electric Line. Dead include Orr Dawson and Frank Kenery of Seville and C F Murdock of Cleveland. one victim remained unidentified. Joseph H. George of Burbank suffered a fractured skull and burns. Several seriously hurt were taken to St John’s Hospital in Cleveland.
A federal jury after ten hours deliberation found Franklin D. Safford guilty of perjury for falsely swearing that James W. Osborne, former Assistant District Attorney, was the man known as Oliver Osborne who accompanied Rae Tanzer to a Plainfield New Jersey hotel.
