Louisville and New Albany officials open a wide scale inquiry into a fraud scheme involving more than fifty people. Investigators allege doctors falsified medical certificates and insurers were swindled through fake life policies totaling well over 100000 dollars.
Chicago January 27 Four members of the federal grand jury that investigated the beef trust in 1908 prompted a new probe. Attorney General Wade HBlIs says there is friction in the beef inquiry and that the investigation will proceed under the antitrust statute, with Edwin W Sims remaining district attorney in charge.
Albert J. Heliker of Commercial Life Insurance in Indianapolis says larger developments may follow in the Louisville fraud case. He names a physician and three women as possible participants, citing J. J. Keane, already under arrest, as the source of initial policy concerns involving Walter E. Rider.
The Huston trial in Harrisburg pauses due to a juror with scarlet fever quarantine. Juror concerns over family risk lead to postponement of Joseph M. Huston of Philadelphia, accused of conspiracy to defraud the state via a furniture contract, until March 31.
Charles Moline aged 23 confessed to poisoning his father Frank Moline with strychnine in Barton Pierce County. The elder Moline died while returning home and an inquest began. sheriff had overheard suspicions and arrested the son claiming motive linked to his mother’s remarriage and inheritance.
Taft administration drafts a federal incorporation bill after months of study by Attorney General Wickersham and Secretary Nagel. The measure offers three enforcement avenues including congressional charter repeal, receivership actions by the corporation commissioner, and Sherman antitrust violations by the attorney general. Advocates say it will curb monopolies while preserving legitimate business groups.
London reports rising Liberal fortune as Unionists 258 to Liberals 253 with Laborites 40 and Nationalists 76. Premier Asquith in London consults with officials ahead of king’s audience and cabinet meetings likely reshuffle after Gladstone’s appointment.

The fifty first birthday of William II was honored by Cincinnati Germans at the Business Men’s club with toasts to the Kaiser and to President Taft. Dr A F Morgenstern was toastmaster as J A Lettenbauer and Mayor Lewis Schwab responded, praising Lincoln, Roosevelt and Taft and noting Taft’s strong leadership and character.
President Taft cabled Emperor William of Germany birthday congratulations and good will from the U.S. government and people. He wished continued prosperity for Germany on the anniversary of the emperor’s birth.
In Philadelphia on January 27 Associated Press reports trolley men of the Philadelphia Rapid Transit company who had voted to strike at opportune times passed a resolution praising their leaders for delaying the strike and endorsing efforts to obtain arbitration before any car departure.
Joplin Missouri voters approved a local-option measure defeating prohibition by a large margin. In a 6 504 total ballot, the majority against prohibition stood 814. Women and children helped with marches songs and serving lunches at the polls during a bitter campaign.
President Taft telegrams to President Fallieres offering sympathy and Red Cross relief for Paris flood victims. State department asks ambassador if Red Cross contributions for Paris and French provinces are acceptable to the U.S. people.
The French branch of the Y M C A in New York called for aid for flood victims. Henri E. Gourd, head of the French Chamber of Commerce, denied France seeks money, saying they need food and fuel and that Europe must assist France while the United States remains restrained by a barrier.
Justus Goebel agrees to bring the body of Arthur Goebel from Arizona to Frankfort Kentucky for burial beside their brother William Goebel. Funeral arrangements will be made in the city and are expected to attract many friends of the Goebel family.
The murder charge against James Hall for the August killing of Anna Schumacher near Rochester appears unlikely to be pressed. An alibi was provided by a farmer who employed Hall on the murder day, undermining the case.

Ohio Republicans and insurgents anticipate a general caucus with broad attendance to discuss expanding the rules committee by five and removing Speaker Cannon. The Fowler resolution provokes debate, with insiders predicting action within forty eight hours.
The postal savings bank bill drafted by Senators Carter Dolliver and Owen passed a subcommittee and was introduced in the Senate.
