Mass celebrated by Bishop Spalding of Peoria delivers a sermon and dedicatory rites mark the corner stone inscription as Arch bishop Elder presides over the impressive ceremony at Covingtons St Marys Cathedral.
The Covington Catholic Diocese celebrated the dedication of the new cathedral with grand ceremony attended by clergy from across the region. Bishop Maes led the rite as Archbishops and bishops in attendance praised the parishioners’ faith and referenced the diocese’s growth from modest beginnings to a thriving 3000-strong congregation.
Archbishop Elder of Cincinnati conducted dedicatory services at 9 a m assisted by visiting members of the clergy. The ceremony details are noted in the report from the event.
At a Presley Wagner home near Madison West Virginia a wedding reception turned violent when knives and a revolver were drawn. Groom John Willey fled with guests but returned and fired three times at an attacker. he was knocked down and is in critical condition. Warrants issued for arrests tomorrow.
Appleton Wis Jan 27 Dr M J Rodermund who recently spread smallpox virus and wandered among residents has escaped quarantine and fled to a distant city. He was aided by Prof W H Rathbun who arranged a buggy and team and drove him to Waupaca where a southbound train carried him away. Rathbone was arrested and may face no charges according to lawyers. Public alarm and threats of lynching accompany the escape.
The War Office despatch from Pretoria dated January 2 describes multiple engagements. Cunningham fought near Middiefontein and Kopperfontein with Delarey’s force, suffering casualties including two officers wounded and thirty-seven men wounded, four killed. Lichtenburg saw yeomanry captured but later released except for a Major and three men. Smith-Dorrien’s five hour engagement on the march from Woogibapine to Carolina drove back Boer forces despite river defense. losses included one officer killed and two officers plus thirteen men wounded. A British train with troops and stores was waylaid near Skjkligp last Friday. Boers retreated when pursued by an armored train.
In Fremont Ohio on January 27 John and Henry Rense smashed the office door of attorney Byron A. Fouche and assaulted him. One brother nearly bit off two fingers in the struggle. Fouche administers his father's estate and the brothers seek revenge for alleged wrongs. The pair were promptly arrested.
