Chicago NSA officials protested to Food Administrator Hoover over Chicago newspaper ads urging people to "come to California" where fresh meat oversupply ends meatless days. The notices claimed McAdoo said Pacific rail passenger service would not be affected by Eastern changes. The protest denounced the ads as indefensible, inviting the idle rich to California and flaunting slackers.
The Food Administration asks wholesalers retailers bakers and consumers to cut wheat purchases to 70 percent of 1917 levels and bakers to 80 percent while encouraging substitutes like potatoes vegetables corn and oats to bolster overseas food supply.
