London dispatch reports 550 killed on Bali island in the Malay archipelago with over 1000 houses destroyed and the Governor's palace seriously damaged. Bali, a Dutch East Indies possession, has about 700,000 inhabitants and an area near 2100 square miles.
U S officers press witnesses in a widening corruption probe naming new figures led by Edward Bathgate Sr former councilman at large and others from the Eighteenth Ward including Oscar Klayer deputy clerk William Farrell and John Tooker.
At the Congress of Constructive Patriotism in Washington on January 26 a St Louis School superintendent Benjamin Blewitt collapsed and died after reacting to a delegate’s remark. The session featured calls for universal military training and national service with letters from Theodore Roosevelt and New Jersey Governor Edge supporting the idea.

In Arizona near Arivaca, about forty miles south of Tucson, fighting raged all day at Stone House between Mexican troopers and American cowboys. Cowboys tried to move cattle from the boundary line. Mexicans opened fire and Americans retreated. Troop B Utah Cavalry provided initial returns and reinforcements were sent from Arivaca.
Forces of Francisco Villa have occupied El Valle Chihuahua after Pershing's outposts withdrew. Villa reportedly set headquarters at Madeira and planned to seize Casas Grandes once Colonia Dublan HQ vacated. About 100 refugees reached Columbus from Colonia Dublan aboard six trucks carrying HQ bags.
Officials said American troops would protect a flight carrying refugees scheduled to depart from the border tomorrow. Passengers are to be escorted and the operation aims to ease border arrivals amid mounting humanitarian needs.

William J. Burns, detective, found guilty in the Court of Special Sessions of publishing private papers taken from desks of Seymour and Seymour attorneys in New York City. Martin Egan, publicity manager for J. P. Morgan & Co., was found not guilty of the same offense.
London reports the German Emperor will turn 58 tomorrow as rulers and statesmen of the central powers gather at German headquarters.
