The body of John Paul Jones was laid to rest in the new crypt under the Naval Academy chapel in Annapolis Maryland. Secretary Meyer French Ambassador Jusserand and Governor Goldsborough attended as 700 midshipmen escorted the casket from Bancroft hall to the chapel. A funeral dirge played by the Naval Academy band accompanied the casket as it was lowered into the marble receptacle and a memorial service followed in the chapel. Chaplain Pierce delivered the eulogy. The body had rested in Bancroft hall rotunda since arrival from France years earlier.

Madame Madia Putchin, a fencing professor, killed her husband in a duel using rapiers after challenging him over an insult to her honor. The event drew a fashionable crowd to their fencing rooms where an army officer’s jealousy sparked the confrontation.
Captain William Elliott, assistant to the depot quartermaster at St Louis, arrives to assess flood conditions in Evansville Indiana and Kentucky towns Ashbysburg Walnut Bottoms Uniontown. An 11 year old Frank Engstrom of Georgetown Montana was chased 15 hours by a mountain lion near Echo Lake between Anaconda and Georgetown. He climbed a tree to escape the animal and both legs were amputated after he was brought to Butte. The boy crawled home and his surgeons hope to save one leg but he fears life as a cripple.
London dispatch reports Balkan plenipotentiaries drafting a note to Turkish officials urging that peace talks be broken off. Delegates aim to justify surrender of Adrianople and Aegean islands as a condition to peace, warning of risks and delays for allied gains. Battleships King Edward VIII and Zealandia sail to the Levant as Turkey’s foreign ministership sees changes.
A basement fire at the Paxton hotel annex in Omafia Nebraska caused panic among about 100 guests. All escaped. forty plus, including E. H. Shaw of Staunton Massachusetts, were rescued on ladders in minimal clothing. Damage to the building was small.
