The Secretary testifies before the War Investigating Commission insisting he had no personal connections in the expenditure of funds and denies favoritism.
Secretary Alger testifies he did not receive official objections to beef used by the army. He details duties in the War Department, denies personal interest in contracts, and notes a Santiago beef shortage due to landing problems rather than lack of supply. He cites no complaints of spoiled beef from field camps.
Secretary Alger testifies on lack of medicines and supplies for the Fifth Corps at Montauk. He notes orders issued, no report of unavailability, and that precautions were taken to keep the camp healthy and comfortable despite deficiencies. He declined to add further statements.
In Helena Montana on January 26 Senator Whiteside, who produced thirty thousand dollars of alleged bribe money at the session start, charged openly that every Clark vote was bought. He named Representative Garr who shouted that he was an infamous liar. The grand jury said money was used on both sides but not enough to indict.
W. H. Penland cashier of the defunct First National Bank of Asheville has made a full confession to embezzlement, joining former president W. E. Breeze and director J. E. Dickerson in a case before the United States Court. Officials declined to provide details of the confession.
The Parr's Bank robbery in London saw £40,000 in large notes returned by post. The thief reportedly walked behind the counter past 100 clerks and fled undetected. American thieves are suspected as police offer no clear leads. £36 1000 notes and £22 100 notes were involved. The Bank of England will cover the sum. a 19 percent dividend was declared.

A dispatch from Youngstown reports Bishop Horstman of Cleveland demanding the Sisters of Charity at Mahoning Valley Hospital return to the Pittsburgh Mother Superior or remove their habits. He warns excommunication if they do not comply, claiming they lacked proper authority from the Mother Superior.
A man drew water from a farm well near Suffolk on Columbus Bartlett's property and retrieved the body of a dead infant. The infant had been in the well for an unknown period and was murdered.
Ohio representative Grosvenor argues the Philippines future and war policies rest with Congress not the President. He defends the administration, praises military leaders, and condemns opposition as undermining unity while forecasting possible changes to the regular army and staff size.
Special Dispatch reports the Hawksdale from Hamburg to Mel, ashore on Long Sand near Margate as heavy seas run. Seven saved by Clacton Ifeboats. three including the Hawksdale's crew drowned. The ship, built in Londonderry in 189%, 1,723 tons, hailed from Liverpool and belonged to P Iredale & Porter.
Emil Messingschlager of Morning View shot and killed N. Baker of Kenton Station in Butler Kentucky after Baker reportedly insulted him regarding a shoeshop fire. Messingschlager, 35, fled by train to Kenton where he confronted Baker and opened fire while intoxicated. Baker had recently survived a shoeshop fire in which Geo Reith perished.
Canton Ohio January 26 Mrs Anna B E George has not decided to plead to the first degree murder indictment for the shooting of George D Saxton Her attorneys and the Prosecuting Attorney did not meet to set arraignment date The motion to quash the indictment and a plea of abatement are pending The arraignment would likely be Monday morning if she consents and the overruled motions could lead to higher court appeals or a plea in error if convicted.
Harrisburg report says Senator Quay remained fourteen votes shy of election in the U S Senate. The day saw minor defections with Abrams switching from Stewart to Huff and Edmiston from Dalzell to Irvin. Charles Emory Smith lost his usual ballot due to Senator Sproul's absence. No absentees were paired, and the Assembly adjourned after no election.
Christina January 2 United States Senator Knute Nelson of Minnesota the American Commissioner to the Bergen expedition and O A Thorp of Chicago have been gazetted Knights of St Olaf.
In Cleveland Ohio on January 26 a Big Four train traveling at about forty miles an hour fatally struck and killed Patrick Grady and his sister Mrs Anna Clague as they walked on the tracks.
Former Attorney General Augustus H. Garland collapsed while addressing the U S Supreme Court at 12 15 P M and died within ten minutes The incident disrupted the court as Garland spoke calmly and then fell suffering a fatal apoplexy with colleagues and officials aiding him before he passed away.
President Bundy of the Ohio Republican League says the Speakers' Committee will not allow any Governor candidate to address the league banquet. Any candidate attending may give a five minute speech. Banquet plates cost 5 dollars, charging aspirants 1 dollar per minute for the audience.
In Toledo on January 26 the Grand Dominion of Ohio released official vote tallies for Pythian Grand Lodge officers. Results show John C. Geyer 5160, Josiah Cotrow 5161, L. W. Ellenwood 6159, George B. Donavin 5146, Charles J. Deckman 5160, 8. M. McLoud 5159, James Dunn 1293, Charles E. Brown 3027, Andrew E. Dow 839.
The Excelsior Literary Society of Heidelberg University elected George Dewey and W. S. Schley as honorary members. Dewey and Schley acknowledge the honor in letters from Manila and New York respectively, expressing gratitude and appreciation.
The newly organized American Sugar Beet Company announced a capital structure of 5 million dollars in preferred stock and 15 million dollars in common stock. The company will operate in the territory west of the Missouri River.

Wesley Lyons aged 20 son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Lyons of Somerset committed death by own action at 3 o clock this morning after a love dispute with Mary Davis. Earlier he shot Tom Roberts in a depot stoppage but Lyons fled to a train and killed himself. Roberts likely recovers.
Findlay Ohio January 26 Daniel Powell died from morphine taken in response to a broken romance. The death was attributed to the effects of the dose and the incident was reported by local authorities.
The Ohio Municipal League annual convention in Zanesville elected officers and held a banquet. L H Gibson of Zanesville was named President and J R Lindermuth of Dayton Vice President. Other officers include S O Giffin of Columbus Secretary and J L Orbison of Carthage Treasurer. Trustees elected were R E McKisson of Cleveland and 8 M Jones of Toledo with H G Cartwright of Wilmington as solicitor. Dayton will host the next convention. The banquet featured speeches by Kibler, McKisson, Young, Jones, and Black on topics from codifying to reform in city government.
A southbound Valley Railroad freight train wrecked at Sandyville north of Canal Dover Ohio after a brake beam dropped. Ten cars derailed and piled up. Brakeman Grant Slutz died of injuries after extraction from the wreck.
