City officials plan a welcome for returning heroes with bands and fireboats greeting the flotilla as crowds gather to honor them. The fleet will escort America up the bay amid celebratory cheers and communal thanks.
One of Ohio Gov. Coxs most important posts is to be filled next week with Judge C. S. Younger of Celina Mercer County named State Superintendent of Insurance. The appointment ends a contest between Younger and A W Geisinger of Columbus. Younger has served as probate judge of Mercer County and as special counsel to the attorney general.
Dr E S Shumaker superintendent of the Indiana Anti Saloon League wins a thirty day stay of execution from Judge Robert C Baltzell to permit further legal action. He was convicted of contempt for statements in the league annual report criticizing Indiana Supreme Court members and faces a sixty day sentence plus a $250 fine. The stay follows a federal habeas corpus petition after a prior pardon was ruled invalid. The case ties to former Gov Ed Jackson and the 1927 sentencing.
George F. Henry a 57 year old Warren Pennsylvania grocer vanished from his home on Thanksgiving Day and was found in the Ohio River at Marietta. Warren police ruled the death a self inflicted act during a period of despondency.
Doorn Holland January 25 former German ruler Wilhelm II on the eve of his seventieth birthday spoke through Baron Ulrich von Sell to an Associated Press chief in Berlin. He denied wartime cruelty and said the November 5 1918 preliminary treaty and reparations issue rest on breach of treaty with Wilsons program. The Kaiser signed a foreword for an interview to be published January 26.
Dr. William E. Dodd of the University of Chicago spoke at the University of Cincinnati on The South at the Cross Roads. He said Southerners favor a prohibition law that can be broken without too much risk and noted shifting political alignments shaping national business and politics.
Ralph A. Wood realty dealer and Cecil Holt two of five men tied to the December 17 robbery of the Sturgis National Bank face arraignment in Centerville with bail set at 50000. Prosecution links Wood and Holt to Detroit timing. alibis from a department store and Cadillac Motor Company workers are cited.
Dr. Frank L. Bowsher, 42, a prominent Steubenville physician, was shot outside his home by an unidentified man who fled. He described the assailant as medium height of foreign appearance and did not know the motive. Three bullets struck him as he lay wounded on the sidewalk.
Oscar W. Underwood of Alabama, longtime Democratic leader and former Senate and House figure, died at Woodlawn Virginia after a cerebral hemorrhage and a stroke. Senate adjourned in respect. he had challenged Bryan over tariff policy and fought the Ku Klux Klan. He leaves a widow Bertha and two sons, to be buried in Birmingham.
Reports from Asuncion say Brazilian soldiers were killed in a clash with Paraguayan civilians escorted by eight soldiers near Puenta Pora. Washington warned of Bolivia buying several million dollars in arms from a British firm, with shipments to Bolivia already en route and no U.S. arms shipped yet.
Hollywood police investigate after film actress Alma Rubens leaped from a doctor’s car while en route to a private sanitarium. The doctor, who would not identify himself, said Rubens slashed him with a paper knife and later was said to be taken to a private ambulance. The wounds were described as not serious.
Washington reports the House completed 43 measures before adjourning for the weekend after the death of former Senator Oscar W. Underwood of Alabama. The chamber cleared most private bills, including omnibus pension increases for Civil War veterans and current service members, while the Ways and Means Committee heard tariff input from farm and fishing interests for an upcoming extra session.
Chicago authorities ordered a large roundup as 104 squad leaders were summoned to central headquarters and instructed to raid known gang gathering places in a bid to curb crime.
