Paris Jan 25 Edward N Hurley chairman of the United States Shipping Board warned at a Franco American dinner that France must prepare for intensified German competition now organized to focus on commerce. He urged Made in France protection, fair shipping rates, and French leadership to rehabilitate and expand its merchant marine and industry.
U S leaders display cautious endorsement of proposals while showing limited enthusiasm for the plan. Lloyd George and Orlando support the project, aiming to project strength and uphold ideals amid tense negotiations.

Charles Schneider, 43, accused of murdering Port Fulton Town Marshal Stephen Miller, was found dead in his cell after a not guilty verdict due to unsound mind. The jury cleared him of murder as he fatally cut his throat with a razor minutes before the courtroom verdict.
Robbers broke into the trunk of Peter Gurgetz in Cleveland on January 25 and took 8100, much of it belonging to nineteen boarders housed in the Gurgetz home where Gurgetz acted as their banker. They fled after stealing, leaving several thousand dollars behind.
On Armistice day the US Army on the western front ranked second in strength to France with 1,950,100 men under ration strength. French forces numbered 2,559,000, while British and Portuguese forces totaled 1,718,000 and Belgian Italian troops about 200,000. They face charges to hinder interstate streetcar operation and to defy Judge Pollock’s injunction. All pleaded not guilty with bonds set at 5000 each. Names include Frank O'Shea E F Michael Mrs Sarah Green Jerry Burnett and others.
Lawrence Massachusetts workers approve a plan to cut weekly hours from fifty four to forty eight with no pay cut, starting February 3, and avoid a strike by workers returning each day after an eight hour shift. The Pacific Mills and Lawrence Duck Company threaten shutdowns if the plan is forced. Approximately 25 000 operatives affected.
