Copenhagen Jan. 25 Iceland Parliament passed a measure forbidding sale of alcoholic liquors. Of its forty members thirty four are elected by popular suffrage. All the remaining stock in the Danish dependency has been exported.
Rear Admiral Austin M Knight, president of the Naval War College, urged creation of a Council of National Defense and a Navy Department division of strategy and operations in New York. He said the current Navy structure is inadequate and would fail under wartime strain.
Berlin reports sanguinary fighting in Alsace along a long front line from the North Sea to Switzerland. German headquarters claim repulsed French attacks with heavy French losses, plus territory gains for Germany in southwestern Berry au Bac. Other lines note Russian losses near Gumbinnen in East Prussia.
Thaw's attorneys moved to have Harry K. Thaw sent to Bellevue Hospital to determine his sanity, at his arraignment in the New York Supreme Court on a charge of conspiracy in his 1913 Matteawan escape. Decision was reserved. no bail sought and he was remanded to the Tombs.
The Supreme Court upheld the constitutional right of employers to require employees to renounce union affiliations as a condition of employment. The decision voided the Kansas coercion statute and suggested similar laws in thirteen states and Porto Rico would fall. T. B. Coppage, a Frisco Railway division superintendent, was convicted for threatening to dismiss a switchman who refused to leave the Switchman’s Union.
John D. Rockefeller Jr testified for five hours at the U.S. Commission on Industrial Relations hearing in New York. He discussed Colorado Fuel and Iron Company investments, stated support for lawful labor organizing, and said his father’s $24 million stake had fallen to $19 million while noting potential remedies for mining camp conditions. Police and private detectives surrounded the event.

From Berlin to London reports state German cruiser Karlsruhe sank eleven merchant vessels in two weeks. The British armored cruiser Viknor was lost off Ireland after striking a mine, with all hands presumed dead. Commander Ernest O. Ballantyne led Viknor. crew numbers unavailable.
The United States has sent a formal note to Germany expressing willingness to make arrangements with German military authorities in de facto Belgian territory without discussing sovereignty. The note signals accommodations may be made as needed to manage Belgian affairs under German control.
German imperial marine authorities forbid wireless use on merchant ships in German waters except in distress. Ambassador Gerard cabled from Berlin that instructions were issued for wireless use when entering the Weser.
Germany protested to the State Department through Ambassador Count Bernstorff against shipments of American hydroplanes to European belligerents. The embassy statement argued such aircraft are war vessels and cited Curtiss works at Hammondsport as a point of concern.
