Albert B. Fall testified that E. L. Doheny lent him $100000 on his personal note on November 30, 1921. Doheny said the loan had no relation to oil leases and that it was a personal loan to enable Fall to expand a New Mexico ranch. The testimony sparked further questioning of Fall and intensified congressional scrutiny.
Mrs. Naomi Hodges, 26, of Newtown Ohio, is killed when a truck carrying her and Thomas Henry skids on ice on Montgomery Pike at Sixteen Mile Stand. Henry is injured but not seriously. Coroner notified.

Glasgow Kentucky January reports William Chambers a Black man was convicted of murdering Charles Bybee of Bowling Green after sixteen minutes of deliberation. The verdict carries the death penalty and National Guardsmen were deployed to deter mob violence. Chief events include the arrest after Bybee’s Christmas gifts linked to Chambers and a mob outside the Glasgow jail. The date for execution was set for March 7.
In Chemnitz district and nearby towns, unrest among unemployed sparked clashes with police. Demonstrators were dispersed as police fired on crowds in Aue and Schwarzenberg, wounding sixteen. Albenrode reported one fatality. Seven officers were injured.

Mrs Remus plans to move to Atlanta to be near her husband as he begins an eighteen month sentence with six months more to serve plus a $1000 fine.
In Columbus on January 24 1924 the Ohio Republican convention endorsed President Coolidges bid for the national nomination and named seven delegates at large to Cleveland. The slate includes Willis Fess Daugherty Procter Knight Battelle Tod with alternate names approved. The second choice remains undecided amid pressure on Theodore Burton.
In a partisan House debate on taxes Republicans on the Ways and Means Committee proposed writing their own income tax rates. Democrat Garner said the Mellon bill would not pass, and that Coolidge would not veto a tax bill with higher Democratic surtax rates. The committee eyed repealing taxes on telegraph and telephone messages while limiting revenue loss to about 120 million dollars.
Retired Police Lieutenant Jacob Conver who had captured many criminals was robbed at Cincinnati Oil Station on West Sixth Street. He and assistant William Siglock confronted a masked intruder who fled with about $50 to $60 after drawing a revolver.
A large fire leveled the village of Grau near Turin on January 4 leaving several hundred residents homeless. No injuries are reported and the cause is under investigation.
