In Marshfield Missouri on January 24 the jury found Walter A. Dipley and Goldie Smith guilty of first degree murder in the Ketchel case. Each defendant was recommended for life imprisonment after a 17 hour deliberation.
Porto Rico requests a postponement on action in Washington regarding the Olmstead bill which would establish a new form of government. Objections focus on amendments giving the president appointment of thirteen insular senators and the governor naming judges court clerks and marshals.
James E. Martine, backed by Governor Wilson, won forty votes in the New Jersey legislative balloting for the U S Senate seat, nearly a majority of both houses. Former Senator James Smith Jr released supporters to stop backing him as Martine nears a majority in the joint meeting. Martine remains at his Plainfield home recovering from grip while signaling support for Bryan.
Toystore Graham Phillips editor died in Belle vue hospital after being shot by eccentric musician Fitzhugh Coyle Goldsborough. The motive linked to a tarnished view of Phillips's novels. Phillips remained conscious most of the day, with family and Senator Beveridge at his side, before succumbing to hemorrhage from a chest wound.
Alma Lahmer a 17 year old domestic at 622 West Ninth Street was found gagged and bound in a dry goods box on the third floor after an assault the neighborhood suspects a black man seen nearby. She lies in critical condition at the city hospital and the attacker is at large.
In Washington on January 24 Senator Lodge accused a foreign steamship trust of controlling Pacific and South American trade and discriminating against American exporters. The House Ways and Means Committee favored a five member permanent tariff board and approved a gold certificate provision to back public debt payments.
Washington leaders from the Army Navy and Congress proposed inviting adoption of Representative Hobson’s bill creating a council of national defense to outline a permanent military policy. The committee took no action but is expected to be favorably reported to the House this session.
