Katherine Clemmons Gould, holder of a $36,000 yearly alimony, appeared in New York court as defendant in a suit by Malecome Butler to recover $2,980 for a millinery company. Gould denied mobility claiming support rights at purchase and that the goods were necessaries of life. case continued.

Kansas City Jan 24 Three persons were killed and three injured when a car owned by John Mahoney of Kansas City Kan plunged 40 feet into Cliff Drive Canyon after Mahoney lost control on a curve. Dead are John Mahoney Mrs John Mahoney Thomas McGuire. Injured are John O Connor Nellie Mahoney A Mahoney child seven. The car was wrecked and six passengers could not alight before the plunge.
Toronto dispatch reports thirty-two dead, two missing, and forty-six injured from the Spanish river wreck. Officials say coaches have been raised and the dead removed, with possible additional bodies not admitted by officials.
Thomas H. Carter and other senators discussed the Postal Savings Bank contest and post roads. A committee meeting is planned for tomorrow morning. Senator Lodge expects quick passage in the Senate and little House opposition.

Harvey A. Rosenthat and F. B. Ringle of Tiffin Ohio and R. M. Campbell of New Orleans were arrested in New Orleans on arrival from Colon. They are accused of attempting to murder a Panama police captain, and were taken into custody at the request of the Panama minister. The men deny the charges.
Twelve jurors were declared free of bias after today’s proceedings in the Panama libel suit against Press Publishing, publisher of The New York World, by the United States government in the United States circuit court. Tomorrow they will be sworn in unless rejected by peremptory challenges.
The House fixed the salaries of the judges of the court of customs appeals created by the tariff law at 7000 each instead of the 10000 named in the law. The $3000 difference from circuit court salaries sparked ongoing congressional controversy.

Edward Hostetter, a farmer six miles north of South Bend, attempted to shoot a dog and killed Mrs. Melford Price, 21, as she approached along the highway. The shot entered her temple. Hostetter fled and has not been arrested.
In Elgin Illinois on January 24 the price of extra fancy creamery butter fell to 30 cents a pound, down from 36 cents. Board members attributed the drop to pelletion and trends toward temperatepriced goods amid reports of a local butter boycott. The move was welcomed with applause from attendees.
Postmaster General Hitchcock issues an order to save the government about 200000 dollars a year by requiring postmasters to account for excess revenue from selling stamped envelopes and newspaper wrappers. Previously stamps were charged per thousand and profits from lots, a few cents per sale, were kept by postmasters with department approval.

In Toledo on January 24, testimony tied letters to Salvatore Lima, alleged Black Hand chief, via mail carrier R. J. Pennell and handwriting expert W. G. Pengelly. Jury heard Lima store and home on Pennell route and examined envelopes with Lima handwriting. Documentary evidence includes a constitution of the Society of the Banana with deadly penalties. Witnesses connected the document to Joseph Ignoffo, and a receipt traced Lima handwriting to payments of 1500 dollars to Fabio Chinciola via Ven tola and an Italian laborer at Valley City Ohio.
In Washington Jan 24 the House blocked a 125000 deficiency appropriation for the national immigration commission after Rep Macon of Arkansas denounced the body as a junketing failure. He accused members of overseas travel and unspent reports while Latimer and others urged delaying action. The vote ends the funding for now as Senate work continues.
Shamerul Silema a police officer noted for uncovering the Minda pur Bengal bomb conspiracy was shot dead in the Calcutta high court. The fleeing Bengalese threw a bomb at pursuing mounted police and fled, only to be overpowered before using a pistol.

Two engineers and a fireman were injured when a collision on the Cincinnati Hamilton & Dayton line near the Hamilton belt line caused two locomotives and fourteen freight cars to wreck. Engineer C. M. Hill and Fireman Stanley Mitchell, both of Indianapolis, were hospitalized with cuts and bruises. A switch engine hauling Champion Coated Paper cars stalled, and a following eastbound freight could not stop, plunging into a pile of cars. A separate Middletown wreck involved Freight Trains 64 and 67, with four engines damaged and crews jumping to safety.
