The Old '76 Distilling Company plant near Newport Kentucky was destroyed in a major fire the night prior. The loss was estimated between 350000 and 500000 with 12000 barrels of whisky in the north warehouse and 15000 barrels in the large bonded warehouse at risk as flames raged along the Licking River. Firefighters faced shifting walls and exploding barrels amid high winds and limited water supply.
United States Senator Russell A. Alger of Michigan died at 8 45 this morning at his Washington residence after an acute edema of the lungs. He had been in frail health for some time but had attended Senate activity Tuesday and was at the War Department yesterday afternoon. Funeral planned for Detroit with services at 2 pm Saturday. He is survived by his widow and five children.
Marcus Franks a 53 year old salesman living with his mother Theresa Franks at 2118 Fulton avenue died by suicide in a city hospital ward last night He was found with his head under water in a rear tub at 7 30 and could not be revived after an hour of resuscitation The hospital had admitted him ten days earlier for neures thenia and he had become melancholy
Thomas Morgan, 32, shot and killed bricklayer Thom as Wedge, 32, after a street confrontation near the Federal Building in Cincinnati. Morgan had sought police protection from two men before Wedge punched him and three others pursued. Morgan fired five times, two bullets hit Wedge in the back and he died at City Hospital. Morgan was arrested, charged with murder, and portrayed as defending himself amid a crowded scene with witnesses ready to testify.
In New York on January 24, the Thaw murder trial advanced when three new jurors joined after forty plus hours of selection. Five jurors had been accepted. Deming B. Smith and Charles H. Fecke were in the box as the court adjourned. Mrs. Evelyn Nesbit Thaw attended with her veil and blue dress, while family members occupied seats behind the defendant as police maintained order in a crowded courtroom.
