Man Attempts To Borrow Four Bits From Police Chief

Joseph Gettin of Watertown New York tried to borrow four bits from Chief Paul Millikin on Elm Street near Seventh and Eighth. He claimed a chicken bone stuck in his wind pipe and was promptly taken to jail by officers after the ruse.

Worker Suffers Serious Burns From Molten Lead at Clifton Springs Distillery

Stewart Dobel, a Ludlow resident on Grove Avenue, suffered severe facial and shoulder burns when a molten lead pot exploded after water was added. A fellow worker caused the blast by pouring cold water into the hot pot. Dobel was taken to City Hospital and may lose sight in both eyes.

Reports from Victoria and Bamfield detail the Valencia wreck with many deaths. Passengers clinging to rigging were mostly women and children. the City of Topeka cannot reach survivors due to heavy seas. Valencia broke apart near Cape Beale with life lost, and several sailors and crew members survived.

General Manager Pierce of the Pacific Coast Steamship Company in Seattle said Valencia is insured for about 150000 with British underwriters covering three quarters and the remainder in San Francisco. The Queen and City of Topeka were sent to assist survivors and Pierce will await officer reports before judging a wreck cause.

Wreck of Valencia. survivors reach Cape Beale

A Cape Beale special reports Valencia drove ashore with about 100 aboard. Six survivors arrived there and said many were drowned as boats and life rafts failed. Boatswain and five seamen reached Cape Beale for help after the catastrophe.
