Welcome words greet visiting manufacturers from many states as they assemble for the annual meeting. Opening of the convention indicates a record attendance and heightened activity among industry leaders.
The fourth annual National Association of Manufacturers opening drew governors and mayors including Asa S. Bushnell, with Theodore C. Search receiving an ovation. The event featured morning felicitations, afternoon committee reports, and a vaudeville smoker, highlighting Ohio's manufacturing leadership and national economic ties.
Early morning crowds packed the Grand Hotel corridors as delegates from across the country arrived by train. President Search and party from the East attended on a special Pennsylvania train, greeted by Governor Bushnell and local officials before proceeding to the convention hall for registration and opening rites.

Special Dispatch to Commercial Middlesborough Kentucky January Anderson Wood died at Knuckles County in a practical joke gone wrong. Albert Shumate, returning from a Gance, jumped out with three companions to scare Shumate demanding money. Shumate fired and killed Wood then fled. This morning he learned of his grave error and has not been heard from since.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune from Princeton Indiana reports Mrs Rebecca A Rosenbarger was found guilty of poisoning her eighteen year old son with intent to kill. Judge Welborn sentenced her to seven years in the State prison for women after noting circumstantial evidence and the son’s testimony as true. She was taken to the County Jail pending transfer to Indianapolis. A $2000 life insurance policy on the boy was cited as a key prosecution point.
Billy Green former supervisor of bridges for the Michigan division of the Big Four sues for 15000 alleging retaliation for refusing padded vouchers and being blacklisted by the railroad when seeking work on Wabash and other lines. He was retired from the post in 189% and now seeks damages.
Tremors struck the valley of Mexico with shocks at 5 80 morning and 6 15 in the afternoon. Citizens dashed into streets and sheltered under doorways as shops, stables, and the national palace suffered cracks. Telegraph reports say the quake reached Vera Cruz Colima and nearby points with many casualties feared.
Cleveland sources report Major Webb C. Hayes of the First Ohio Cavalry as a candidate for President of the Ohio Republican League. He is said to have support from numerous Northern Ohio clubs and Montgomery County leagues. Senator Hanna may miss the Dayton banquet. Judge Day likely will not attend. Senator Foraker will attend and has urged Governor Roosevelt to be there.
Ranson T Powell died at his Marietta home. At 13 years old he enlisted in the Tenth West Virginia and fought in many battles. He endured confinement at Andersonville and Libby. Since 1882 he served in the Pension Department. He was 50.
Ira Crandall, aged 70, a blind farmer, was beaten to death with an ax by Emmet Bouton, a resident of Corry, who is described as deranged. Bouton is reported to be a young man in the same city. Authorities investigate the fatal assault and search for motive.
Washington dispatch reports court martial likely finds General Eagan guilty on at least one charge but expects only a reprimand or mild penalty. The President could approve or mitigate penalties, with no permanent dismissal likely. Seth Brown's speech defends a non permanent colonial policy and criticizes arguments for permanent possession.
In Berlin on January 4, Count Posadowsky-Wehner said Prince Hohenlohe would support an Antarctic expedition proposed to start in 1901. A two year ship build is needed, costing about 1,100,000 marks, with Germany the United States and Great Britain urged to act jointly.
The Navy Department will remove the Merrimac from the edge of the channel in Santiago Harbor by explosives. Lieutenant Blow, who led wrecking operations, says raising the wreck is not cost effective and recommends blasting the hull.
Senator Lindsay answers editor questions over Commodore Watson’s treatment by the Navy Department. He argues Watson, a highly accomplished officer, was bypassed for inferior men during the Cuban naval operations and urges disclosure of the supposed injustices to the public.
In Austin the Texas House referred Mr. Wooten’s resolution denouncing federal war taxes on bonds to the Federal Relations Committee after a heated debate. Representative Pitts argued against the measure deeming it revolutionary and risky for state revolt. Wooten defended seeking a legal ruling and state dignity, but the resolution was referred.
Ex Secretary of State William R Day and his wife arrive in Jacksonville from Canton Ohio for a health pleasure trip. They will stay several days at the St James Hotel then travel south before returning north possibly to Cuba. Day declines interviews on State affairs at Manila but shows interest in dispatches signaling possible trouble there.
Steubenville Ohio January 24 Local officials arrested Emmett Fickes of Elliottsville to stop a threatened whitecapping. Fickes after a 144 hour courtship married his second wife last summer and gave a speech to two thousand serenaders from his roof. His seven year old son dislikes the stepmother and neighbors fault his conduct.
Secretary Alger has been invited by the War Investigating Commission to testify on wartime conduct. While no reply has been made, observers expect him to take the stand tomorrow or soon after.
