In Lexington Kentucky this afternoon two bell boys at the Leland Hotel were involved in a fatal stabbing. Will Hill aged 2 was stabbed in the abdomen with an ice pick thrown by Frank Fisher aged 20. Hill was taken home and will die. Fisher was arrested.
Havana dispatch details Captain General Weyler encamped at Bolondron in Matanzas as he advances. Skirmishes span Pinar el Rio Havana Matanzas and Santa Clara with insurgent camps taken. Insurgents tally 37 dead. Spanish losses include 3 killed and 28 wounded. Captain and officers wounded. Field action at Memagua Volcan ends with insurgents retreating and 32 dead. Lieutenant Menendez wounded twice but kills an insurgent. vicenary and Vicario corroborate minor injuries among Spanish.
City of Mexico January 24 reports from travelers from Cuba confirm Santa Clara’s capture and near Havana fighting. Two young Englishmen Harry F York and A Hervey say insurgents conducted raids and a passenger train was wrecked near Havana. Hervey was wounded in the arm. They will forward a report for Senator Cameron to Washington. Cubans need money ammunition and medicine. Spaniards and volunteers total 285000, mostly youths. Cuban strength about 25000. LEXING PON Ky Jan 2 Dr Lyman Beecher Todd and Colonel Wilbur R Smith were yesterday afternoon elected members of the Lexington School Board in place of ineligible Dr D Bennett and William Warren. The board increased the school levy to thirty cents on the hundred dollars.
Ashland Kentucky January 24 John Heatherlin of Falisburg Lawrence County had an arm shot away by an accidental discharge of high gun while hunting his condition is very serious.
