Andrew D. White, former U S ambassador to Russia, says the Czar is too weak to govern amid revolt. He cites the imperial system, grand dukes, taxation, and war as intolerable pressures fueling the crisis in St Petersburg and Moscow.
Minority holders including B H Kroger challenge the $2.45 million sale of Clinchfield corporation assets to the Hollins syndicate for the C H D railroad. A Baltimore meeting seeks injunctions and higher concessions, signaling a fight over compensation before retirement of Clinchfield.
Chicago police inspect claims that John Hoch a former druggist and chemist may know a secret poison. He allegedly used aliases and faced charges for selling furniture via installments. A wife died years ago after marriage to Hoch and property valued at four thousand dollars was disposed of. Hoch is said to have housed five wives in furnished flats.
The Hamilton Gas and Coke Company will absorb the Hamilton Otto Coke Company and Hamilton city municipal electric plant within days. Todd Field & Co. promotes the consolidation after meetings of involved interests. Capital stock rises to 1.6 million dollars to fund the purchase and merger terms are nearing finalization.
Hoch, 46, a native of Würtemberg Germany and machinist, married Amelia Fisher in Joliet January 18 with Will County Probate Court Judge John Fithiam presiding. Police allege Hoch has at least twelve living wives and four deceased spouses amid three or four suspicious deaths linked to him.
Harry Martin aged 24 of Columbia Hotel was arrested Sunday night at the Columbia Theater by Lt Corbin and Detective Crim on suspicion in the Kroger store robbery on Hamilton Avenue Saturday. He confessed to Detective Crawford that he was one of the robbers after police reports and store clerks identified him. Simons and Levy store noted he bought a new suit late Saturday and switched a revolver from pocket to pocket as the old clothes were discarded. He admitted planning the robbery with accomplices last Wednesday using mackerel barrels in the rear of the store.
A 21 year old woman who passed as a man for years and used aliases reported to City Hospital in Cincinnati. Recounting a life spent in boys schools a convent college in Columbus and a Chicago bookkeeping post she sought treatment while insisting she is female prompting admission to the women’s ward after clarification.
The Receivers and Shippers' Association moves to secure lower freight tariffs for Cincinnati by pressing Southern railroads to reduce charges from Chattanooga to Eastern routes. First class will drop to 9 cents per 100 pounds, second to 5, third to 3, fourth to 5, fifth to 4, and sixth to 5.
