House Democrats vote 149 to 17 to investigate Colorado coal mines and Michigan copper mines. Foster of Illinois to chair the Mines and Mining Committee with hearings expected in Denver Pueblo and possibly Trinidad within a fortnight. The inquiry will determine peonage postal immigration naturalization and judiciary obstructions and whether illegal combinations control production and shipments.
A suitcase found near the Ahmeek mine power plant contained an explosive device with a nitroglycerin can an alarm clock and a dry battery linked by wires. The clock was not active when opened. The mine, a Calumet and Mecla subsidiary, has recently hired many workers amid a copper miners strike.
The American Federation of Labor Executive Council approved resolutions to investigate labor disputes and launch labor organization campaigns in civil service and federal occupations. It calls for garment worker organizing in states with no unions, a statewide labor forward movement in Colorado, and lectures to promote union principles nationwide.
Mrs. Myrtle Rutherford sues Detroit Monroe Toledo Short Line Railway for 10000 dollars claiming a heavy suitcase fell from a car rack injuring her on November 24 1913. Her husband Robert Rutherford also sues for 5000 dollars for damages to his wife. The action was filed in Common Pleas Court.
In London on January 22 reports suggest Joseph Chamberlain plans to retire from Parliament and his son J Austen Chamberlain has been invited to contest the Birmingham seat. Austen Chamberlain has served as MP since 1892 for the East division of Worcestershire.
In a New York City ceremony at the Church of the Transfiguration, Talbot Smith Hanan aged 20, heir to a vast estate, marries Florence Amelia Perkins, daughter of a Narragansett Pier ex‑pressman. The wedding proceeds with family support, defying usual parental objections.

A morning fire at Storrs on the B. and O. Railway gutted the coal elevator and the roundhouse opposite Evans Street. Night engineer C A Stokes first spotted flames in the roundhouse before 2 am. Firemen battled a blazing wooden structure with an oil tank nearby raising explosion fears. by 2 30 am the flames were under control.
Wardwell Townley a third year architecture student at the University of Pennsylvania was found with a bullet in his brain near the Marion Cricket Club golf links. The 22 year old Psi Upsilon member and Mask and Wig contributor likely died by suicide. Fellow students recalled last week’s Wharton sophomore Addison Hartley McCullough drowning in the Delaware River.
Jackson Miss Jan 22 The lower house of the Mississippi Legislature defeated a resolution to amend the state constitution to grant full suffrage to women. The action halted a push on voting rights within the constitution despite broader suffrage movements.

F H Tillotson, the detective who in 1909 kidnapped Marion Bleakley the incubator baby, was pardoned today by Governor Hodges of Kansas. He had faced one to five years in prison but was free on bond while appealing to the U S Supreme Court.
General Salvador Mercado who led the routed Mexican Federal army at Ojinga is placed in command of interned soldiers and refugees at Fort Bliss. He christens the camp street Avenida General Huerta and oversees daily bathing and barber shops for the detainees as the Mexican Consul seeks back salaries. US officers cite no authority to pay uniforms or salaries, with $70 reportedly available from a Federal paymaster incident at Marfa.
