Cincinnati council indefinitely postpones the Eilers ordinance to regulate saloons and Sunday openings amid partisan accusations. Republicans defend current practices and blame Governor Se for enforcing Sunday laws, while Democrats push for the measure as amended.
Special Dispatch reports Colonel W D Mann editor of Town Topics testified in the Hapgood criminal libel case that he borrowed nearly 200000 from J P Morgan James R Keene W K Vanderbilt William C Whitney and others. Several loans were repaid in Town Topics stock valued at 1000 per share and others remained unpaid.
Ohio Senate to consider a Tom L. Johnson style proposal to tax and appraise franchise values of electric, gas, water, telegraph and other public service firms. A three member governor appointed commission would assess franchises along with real property, directing revenue to county treasuries.

Ybarra called the diplomat cautious, calling Taigny a rat in a trap, while Venezuela remains unaware of the broader France Venezuela rupture and Castro’s at Maracay.

Brigadier General Joseph Wheeler retired is gravely ill at his sister Mrs Sterling Smiths Brooklyn residence. He has been confined to bed for three days with a bronchial affection and doctors fear the illness may develop into pneumonia.

The vessel built in 1885 in England displaced 4950 tons and carried four 9.4 inch guns.
Three year old Robert Blymeyer drowned in two feet of water in an old cellar near 1980 Queen City Avenue yesterday afternoon. Dora Blymeyer his sister 13 ventured into the water to pull him out but could not revive him with neighbors assisting.
The Caleb Powers case dominated the Supreme Court on January 22 with a packed chamber. Prominent Kentuckians and a strong legal team argued whether Powers should be removed from federal court to state court for trial. Verdict expected soon, with Carlisle predicting Powers will be sent back to state courts.
Caleb Powers woke about 11 last night and learned the Supreme Court arguments were completed at Washington. He said, on counsel’s advice, he would remain silent but expressed confidence in a favorable decision and anticipated trial before Judge Cochran in the Eastern District of Kentucky.
Indian apolis detectives and Simpson B Rowe questioned William Anadell of Bedford Ind. He confessed he did not his wife who allegedly eloped with Barnes wrote the letter accusing Barnes of the Bedford murder two years ago. Dispatches were sent to Denver officers denying incriminating evidence against Barnes and his likely release is delayed."
A West cold front pushes a warm spell aside with forecasts of rain on the Atlantic coast and snow or rain in the Ohio Valley and lower lake region by Wednesday. Despite the chill, temperatures rose to 71 in the city and 74 in the Ohio Valley amid scattered snow in the Chicago area and south to Vicksburg.
A storm of rain sleet and snow halted elevated trains and wire communications. Workers cleared ice on third rail to resume service while railroads and electric lines suffered widespread outages. Large firms faced delays as downtown traffic recovered slowly and thousands walked home after the Northside Cable Line failed.
Warm spell ends as high pressure moves from the Mississippi Valley. Cold air spreads into Western Indiana Western Tennessee and Northern Texas with rain and thunder along the East Gulf States. Tonight and Tuesday bring rain in the lower lake region Middle Atlantic and Upper Ohio Valley with much colder conditions coast to coast. Storm and gale warnings issued from Key West to Norfolk and along the West Florida Coast and Oregon Washington coasts.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribuna reports New York Harbor fogbound with no ships entering or leaving while several transatlantic liners anchored outside Sandy Hook Bar. The day remained overcast with a warm wave and robins appearing in Central New York.
Boston reports a mild night with a small drop in temperature and 54 degrees at 10 a.m. The sky remains overcast. In Louisville Kentucky and nearby southern Indiana temperatures stay abnormally high for January.
