Henry A. Bilkerd, a 15 year veteran missionary with the American Presbyterian Mission in the Near East, was killed by Wahabi tribesmen near Basra while traveling to Kuwait. Charles Crane, former U S Ambassador to China, survived injury in the same auto. J O Crane and Charles Jones were also present. State Department records note Bilkerd had registered at the Bagdad consulate in 1927 and no official word of his death had reached Washington.
