Wet forces press for modification of dry laws at a Washington conference calling for reform. They present a memorial to President Coolidge through Senators Bayard and Hopkins, urging impartial law enforcement and law modification. The White House response says the president will enforce laws, while critics in Congress denounce the group as seeking nullification of the Eighteenth Amendment.
In Los Angeles on January 21 Mabel Normand testified at Horace Greer’s hearing about the New Year’s shooting of Courtland Dines. She could not identify the .25 caliber pistol used and recalled few details about bottles and the room where the shooting occurred.
Melvin Wright of Pleasant Point School, 23, was bound over to the grand jury on a $500 bond for whipping his sixteen year old wife, a pupil, after forcing her to write on the blackboard that she had never kissed any other man. She fled to her father J C Chrisman and he swore out a warrant.
After two days of severe cold causing railroad delays and fires, a warming trend begins. Forecaster William Devereaux predicts rising temperatures from subzero morning lows to 15 to 20 degrees above zero by noon, with tonight much warmer and a 10 degree above zero low. A heat-related death is blamed on heart disease amid the cold strain in Cincinnati.

In London on January 21 the Conservative Government led by Stanley Baldwin lost a no confidence vote in the House of Commons 328 to 256. The Labor amendment to the address, moved by John Robert Clynes, urged that the Crown be advised to replace the current advisers, with Ramsay MacDonald likely to form a Labour administration, backed by Herbert Asquith and the United Liberals.

Stanley Bald win becomes premier on May 7, 1922 with Labour poised to form the opposition as Britain seeks conservatism and stability amid unemployment and reparations tensions with France. Franco-British relations strain over Ruhr issues but diplomacy maintains the entente as the Baldwin government faces a shifting political landscape.

Gen. Lee Christmas noted soldier of fortune with Central American revolutions died in New Orleans after a long illness from acute anemia due to tropic spruce. He was born on the Amite River in Louisiana and credited with aiding five presidents through revolutionary actions. He leaves a widow and a son in Memphis.
Special Correspondent reports Edward W. Bok testifying before a League of Nations committee about his prize peace plan. He refuses to disclose personal spending or bank balance, saying it is none of others' business. Bok defends using his money to gauge public sentiment through civic groups while denying unlimited wealth or direct intent to pressure Congress.
In Sioux Falls South Dakota the Young Men s Booster Association urged immediate financial relief as two more banks closed. The group warned that without federal aid or outside support South Dakota could face widespread ruin. Closures included International State Bank of Sioux Falls with 1 3 million in deposits and Western National Bank of Mitchell with 425 000 in deposits. Heavy withdrawals prompted both shutdowns. An Evart Michigan bank, Evart State Bank, was ordered closed with 421 000 in deposits, 40 000 capital, 4 000 surplus, due to bad loans.
William H. Chatfield Jr testified he earned money locally and knew nothing of the New York firm’s practices in the embezzlement case with George H. Beazell. He faced cross examination where the prosecutor pressed for admissions while defense rested Beazell and called witnesses including a former partner and creditors to support his position.
President Coolidge outlined a strict economy program for federal departments, prohibiting subsidies expansion and limiting new obligations to approved appropriations. He urged greater efficiency, warned against tax increases, and stressed the need to keep within budget while avoiding wasteful spending.
