British and Turkish naval clash at the Dardanelles sinks the Turkish cruiser Midutlu, formerly Breslau, and beachs the Sultan Yanus Selim, once Goeben. In Petrograd the Constituent Assembly is dissolved by Bolshevik authorities after a tense session.
Nikolai Lenin and Bolshevik Premier with government commissioners attended the opening session of the Constituent Assembly in Petrograd. Prisoners including M Sorokin were escorted under guard to Tauride Palace to join the meeting. M Tseretelli of the Socialist Revolutionary Left attended despite illness as nearly half the Assembly took their seats.
Forecast shows fair skies with warmer conditions Monday and Tuesday across Ohio and West Virginia Kentucky and Indiana. Reported temperatures at Cincinnati for January 2 1918 list highs near 66 low around 12 and a rainfall total around 0.60 inches with light to moderate winds.

New York Jan 20 Names of the first women elected to membership in the Executive Committee of the League to Enforce Peace were announced after a meeting at the Yale Club. They include Dr. Anna Howard Shaw Mrs Eva Perry Moore Mrs Thomas J Preston Miss M Carey Thomas with Taft presiding and others in attendance.
Washington January 20 five experts were named as associate directors of the public service reserve to aid in recruiting the industrial army for the war program. They include Henry M. De Loss of New York and Bridgeport Conn as housing aid, Louis E Reber of Wisconsin, Nathan A Smythm of New York, I W Litchfield of Boston, and Major E N Sanctuary of the War Department personnel committee.
London reports a naval action at the Dardanelles where the Turkish cruiser Midulla formerly Breslau was sunk and the Goeben later beached at Nagara Point. The action involved destroyers and British forces with losses including the monitor Raglan and the M-28.
London news reports General Sir Beauchamp Duff former commander in chief of British forces in India from 1913 to 1916 was found dead in his bed at a West End club. He served in key posts including Assistant Military Secretary for Indian Affairs and chief of staff in India before leading the Indian command.
Secretary Daniels announced that Chief Boatswain's Mate Stief Homiak and the armed naval guard aboard the Armenian steamer Armenia were commended for devotion to duty after the ship was torpedoed in December. The crew held their guns and saved the ship, with Brown the radio operator continuing SOS calls until the dynamo was shut down and the bridge kept contact with the convoy destroyer.
Amsterdam Jan 20 General von Stein Prussian Minister of War says he does not know Americans or their capabilities yet believes central powers are prepared for the United States. He downgrades air fighting as decisive and notes tanks first appeared at the Somme. He stresses victory as only path to peace and lauds the individual soldier as decisive.
San Juan January 20 military guards placed about the Federal Building housing most U S Insular Government offices after officials received information considered important. Guards were also posted on bridges near the city and at other key points.
London January 20 1918 the hands and brains movement gains for labor as Lloyd George secures government support. Eight million new voters including six million women will join the rolls under reform while a Labor Liberal coalition is anticipated with brain workers admitted to the party.

Fuel Administrator Garfield urges retail stores and offices to close or limit lights and elevators while food outlets may stay open. Rail traffic aims to move bunker coal to the Atlantic and southern shores as weather slows freight clearance.
Train No. e the Mercantile Express from Pittsburgh and the West on the Pennsylvania Railway wrecked twenty miles west of Harrisburg. Four enginemen and a mail clerk seriously hurt. passengers uninjured aside from severe cold as the line was blocked for ten hours.
The War Department orders universal psychological testing for enlisted personnel and officers to weed out the mentally unfit and guide promotions. A Fort Oglethorpe program will train 56 psychologists, with data from Camps Lee and Devens showing about 2 percent of drafted men severely deficient.
Edward Robinson, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Cincinnati, will leave at semester end to work with the Department of Mental Tests in Washington. He has conducted successful experiments and is regarded as an expert.

Three young children burned to death in a Yonkers tenement fire as a mother and an older brother carried the crippled father to safety from the third floor. A fireman fell from a ladder during a backdraft rescue attempt but survived with injuries. the blaze destroyed the building leaving twenty four families homeless.
Louis Herbert Moore born November 1 1860 in Brooklyn New York died Saturday in London. He served as General Manager of the American Press Telegram Company and was London correspondent for the Washington Star.
