British troops bivouack near Ladysmith after a daylong clash that reports say was heavy in losses but light in wounds overall. General Buller’s despatch indicates a pivotal battle with the outcome undecided pending renewed action at dawn.
Special cable reports Spearman’s Camp as General Warren shells Boer trenches all day. Boers lose two main positions and retreat three to four miles. British guns, naval howitzers, and air reconnaissance aided a stubborn fight with nightfall smoke and rising moonlight.
London war despatch reports General Clery with General Warren’s force fighting from 6 am to 7 pm at Spearman’s Camp. Artillery supported gains up ridges for about three miles as troops bivouacked. casualties near 100 wounded by 6:30 pm. Killed count not yet known.
Boers at upper Tugela report 200 English troops crossed the Pont Drift into the Federals area. A show of force aimed toward Colenso and another push north toward Oliver's Hook Bridge, which the Boers had blown up several days earlier.

Mayfield Kentucky, January 20. Sam Brigga, a local mail carrier, was shot in Boydsville Post Office by farmer Edward Bruce. Brigga, about 27, one leg, was standing at the window when Bruce fired, the bullet piercing Brigga’s back and lung. Bruce had earlier demanded an explanation for remarks Brigga allegedly made to Bruce’s wife. Brigga’s condition reported as serious. he lives with his widowed mother.
Quartermaster General Ludington reports the transport McClellan arrived in New York with seventy six soldiers who died of yellow fever in Santiago Province last summer and spring. It also carried 375 metallic caskets for the Philippines. The caskets were sent to Santiago when troops were there and are no longer needed in Cuba.
The House spent an hour approving bills and delivering eulogies for the late Representative Danford of Ohio. Members Gill Taylor Brown Grosvenor Norton Lentz McCall Kerr and Gordon spoke in tribute before adjournment at 2 10 p m.

Peoria Illinois January 20 Former Trustee Wilson of the Asylum Board was arrested at his Kinmundy home Friday by Deputy Sheriff Johnston on forgery charges. He was released on $10,000 bond and returned home tonight.
